Needing help!
I'm just finishing my degree in Education, I have loads of experience in working with children with behaviour problems.
I really want to work in the area of child mental health/ behaviour but I'm not sure what types of jobs I could go for without doing a degree in Psychology.
I've asked loads of people for help but no-one seems to have any ideas, therefore I'm asking you lovely people!
Do any of you know what types of jobs I could head towards without starting a whole new degree?

have you spoken to schools?

(, Wed 13 May 2009, 20:16, Reply)
I have
They know NOTHING.

I've also spoken to my uni's careers advisor, all of the teachers and assistants I know and my uni lecturer who specialises in child behaviour :\
I sent messages to various things like the NHS and some other uni's but still no luck...

ain't that a bunch of bullshit
I hate it when people, that are in charge of your education and your future, don't really know what the fuck they're doing.
That's truly fucked up.
All I can say is to hit the internet and see what you can find! There's got to be some information out there.

Not something I know much about,
But is there anyone from your course who you could have a chat with?
Maybe someone else is in the same boat and might have some useful chunks of information.
Just don't ask those awful Bristol girls.

Yeah, sounds like you've got
Mongo and Son as your surveyors, and some kind of retarded cactus-creature as the estate agent.

oh no its worse than that
turns out the building plans were labelled wrong, so the fucktards who built the damn place don't have a clue.

I looked for a
"careers in this" link but there wasn't one. You'd probably want to show that link to someone at the LEA.

.
Have you thought of doing a placement at a summer camp that specialises in kids with the sort of problems you had in mind? My sister once volunteered at an American summer camp for such kids for a summer. Perhaps getting hands-on experience would be beneficial.

There's no getting around it.
You need more study.

Sorry to be brutal, but the world and his dog has a degree; many of them have psychology degrees; and many of them have vague ideas about doing something with children. And - trust me - they'll all have been to everywhere suggested here with their well-designed CVs on scented notepaper.

The queue is long.

You need to make yourself stand out. That means shit-hot work experience. And that, in turn, means making yourself stand out academically.

There's no point fannying around. The treadmill's hard to get on. Once you're on, though, you should be OK.

Good luck...

Try the EBD schools
My ex-wife is a teacher in one. Extra pay (but they emphatically DON'T call it "danger money"), very small class sizes and a severe shortage of teachers willing to work in them.

Late, but...
I know Great Ormond Street Hospital employs a lot of play specialists to help educate the mongier long-term kids - maybe childrens wards in local hospitals might do the same?

Thanks for all the help!
I have more of an idea now where to look :) Will ask people at the LEA about stuff next week.
