MrOli made me think... religious debates
We see a lot of fruitless debates between atheists and religiousists. I'm bored of those though, as entertaining as they can be. They never get anywhere.

I want to see a proper battle royale of debates held with a representative from each recognised world religion. It could be organised as a World Cup style tournament, with qualifying rounds leading to group games leading to the thrilling finals at some suitably God-ish venue (Mount Olympus perhaps?).

Just imagine: Voodoo versus Islam, Scientology versus Church of the FSM, Christianity versus Yogic Flying etc.

The ultimate victor, to be officially lauded as King of All Religions could then take on Richard Dawkins in a final debating battle to settle the argument once and for all.

Improvements to this rough draft welcomed.

Reminds me of a b3ta image
from some time back, with Top Trumps for deities. The joke being that their omnipotence, smiting power etc was all 100%.

Doesn't a post like this incite those sort of boring spastics-olympics arguments automatically?
I'll start.

ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MYSTERIES OF THE UNIVERSE IS A COCK

What about those who claim to understand the mysteries of COCK?

(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:35, Reply)
they're a universe

Fantastic idea!
Who gets Don King as their promoter?
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:34, Reply)
Rastafarians?

(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:39, Reply)
But How
Would you judge it?

A panel of athiests, or a one made up from the religions not in the specific debate?
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:44, Reply)
It would have to be like boxing
with points scored for taking down the other person's argument
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 10:00, Reply)
Agreed.
Mix debate with Gladiatorial challenges - I would pay top bobs to see a buddhist try to get past Goliath and Panther.

Of course,
we need Terry Wogan commentating.
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:50, Reply)
he is a boring old idiot

(, Fri 29 May 2009, 9:57, Reply)
OK then...
...Graham Norton - equally annoying but younger.
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 10:23, Reply)
Russell Brand
to be the commentator. At least we'd be guaranteed something lewd and inappropriate.
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 10:10, Reply)
and that bloke...
...who does the boxing #Laaaaaydieees and Geeeeeentlemn, in the rrrrrrrrrrrred cornerrrrrrrrrrrr....'

And then shoot the annoying bollix.

How about
sectarian qualifiers? As in, only one representative in the group stages per major religion - some interesting Catholic/Protestant scraps in the early stages, and who knows, perhaps a shock trip to the finals for the Greek Orthodox Church?

You'd have to give some careful thought to what counts as a sect rather than a separate religion mind, are Mormons a branch of Christianity or are they batshit enough to count on their own?

Hmmm.

Qwanza beats all
fact.

Qwanza - ?
what's qwansa?
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 10:51, Reply)
I dunno,
I reckon the druids are the ones to watch.

It's a made up alternative to Christmas
that some African Americans celebrate.

(As far as I know it has nothing to do with actual religious practices in Africa.)
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 14:12, Reply)
But I suspect
Kwanzaa might just edge it.
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 11:01, Reply)
I thought
it was the Angolan currency
(, Fri 29 May 2009, 11:08, Reply)
That's a K but only one A.
And there's a river too. It's all so confusing. They should go back to the colonial names.
