The only problem is whether you
would get a work permit. But I doubt that would be much of an issue if you are properly qualified for the job. You could check on the home office website and make sure though.

But I am american, they have to take me right?
I was wondering about that. I assume the company would help address this issue. There is a shortage of qualified huydrogeologists in the the UK (at least according to a government web site) so I don't think I would be considered to be taking away jobs from the english. Don't tell the BNP though.

I work in a nearly related field
and there is indeed a bit of a shortage. Is it a large company you've applied to?

The add was through a recruiting web site (I found on the UK groundwater forum web site)
and did not specify the company or its size. It is a consulting company and I assume a larger one. The job is for a "Technical Director of Hydrogeological and Geological Services" which indicates a larger company.

The company can't emply you unless you have a valid work permit
they might help you get one, but I would do a bit of research just to be on the safe side. If there is a shortage in the UK then it makes it easier.

The BNP should leave him alone as long as he's not too tanned when he arrives over here.
Stay out of the sun for a while buddy.

No problem.
My ancestry shows though with my pale white burns in two minutes of direct sunlight Irish-English skin tone. (My hair used to be dark and curly but now it is just gray and curly, don't know if that matters).
