The Thing, Alien and Event Horizon

just had a quick look
might be an "origins" movie rather than a straight remake...has the potential not to be completely fucking awful.

they are doing the same with predator apparently

Ah, right.
But still... Why?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:14, Reply)

It's ok,
I was making a "milking the cow" gesture.
But I think the guy in my office thought I was calling him a wanker.

Say to that guy
"Yeah, you saw me!" Then pause for a moment, before adding a quieter "Yeah".

Top five
The Entity
The Shining
The Exorcist
Alien
Pan's Labyrinth (not stictly a horror but fucking memorable and scary as shit).
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:11, Reply)
I've not seen many horror films as I am a MASSIVE scaredy cat.
So don't make fun of my list.
The Uninvited
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Entity (scared the bloody piss out of me when I was a kid)
The Devil's Rejects
Boogy Man (which I thought was very good until the ending with it's supremely crap cgi)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:13, Reply)
What's that underground one
With the cannibal mutants?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:15, Reply)
Descent?
Good film!
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:15, Reply)
I thought that was awful
couple of good moments: pipe through the head, ice pick in the neck

the rest was a bit pants
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:18, Reply)
I liked it
Especially the ending.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:18, Reply)
It's a bit more disturbing horror
Than the regular gore horror or BOO! horror. The bit where she lies motionless while one of them slowly crawls past is well creepy.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:35, Reply)
BOO!
was a pretty good film as well.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:40, Reply)
CHUD?

CHUD is awful!

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:21, Reply)
Hush now old man
C.H.U.D. is a great film, C.H.U.D. II, Bud the C.H.U.D. is a completely different story.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:25, Reply)
Perhaps.
I haven't seen it since 1987, so my memory may be hazy.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:27, Reply)
There there dear
*hands tea and pipe and wraps blanket round DGs legs*
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:29, Reply)
That's OK
Normally folks just tell me to shut up when I'm talking about films. My tastes tend to run to the more terrible ones.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:31, Reply)
Hmm
What's the scariest film then?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:16, Reply)
I'd say
[REC]
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:18, Reply)
Definately not
Quarantine, for that is shite.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:20, Reply)
Haha
Don't even get me started, it was soooo bad! :(
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:25, Reply)
That would depend
on what kind of scary you're wanting.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:26, Reply)
Good point
I want freak me out, afraid to go into dark rooms scary.

Not "Oh my god that made me jump", that's just shit.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:27, Reply)
[REC]
fo'shizzle
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:30, Reply)
One Missed Call
The Japanese one, failing that [REC], and it'll make you jump as well.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:33, Reply)
I've got One Missed Call...
But [REC] is going on the Amazon list!
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:34, Reply)
Perhaps
you should return my Zombie Strippers & Clone Wars DVDs and then raid my horror collection :0)

No problem
I'll drop them back soon!

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:54, Reply)
Ooooh super question...
I would say, in no particular order...

Creep
Dark Water (The Japanese Original)
IT
28 Days Later
30 Days of Night
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:25, Reply)
30 Days of Night
really?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:28, Reply)
Yup
I really liked it, I just liked that the vampires were more realistic than in most films. Plus I had a soft spot for the story before the film was made, I guess that helped!?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:34, Reply)
Creep was shit
I had such high expectations for it too :(

Dark water was terrifying though
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:29, Reply)
I thought Creep was pretty horrible
especially the bit when the women in the dentists chair wakes up but can't shout for help and then he mimes all the operation stuff. yukky.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:31, Reply)
That bit is
pretty grim. I dunno I guess its just one of those films I can happily watch again and again. There are a lot of horror films I love but can only watch once or twice a year such as Last House on the Left and the original The Hills Have Eyes, you just can't watch them too much, they're too freaky. Creep I could chill out and watch on a Sunday.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:37, Reply)
But he wasn't an effective bad guy/monster
and she was just flat out annoying. I haven't liked her in anything since Run Lola run and the Bourne films though.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:37, Reply)
You're right
as bad guys go he was pretty lame. I guess I rate it because it came out at a time when everyone was doing torture porn it was nice to see something slightly different.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:39, Reply)
Torture porn?
Like Hostel? God that was awful
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:42, Reply)
Yup
I used to be a fan of Eli Roth until he did that. You shouldn't go to watch a horror film at the cinema and spend the entire film laughing.

There are so many horror films out there that are torture related and just so crap. That’s all it is, they just try and make you uncomfortable by seeing too much. I personally like a little bit of suspense and mystery, my imagination is far scarier I don’t need to see someone burn an eyeball out of someone’s head. Ho-hum.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:49, Reply)
Before he did that...
You liked Cabin Fever?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:52, Reply)
I did
again, it was something different. I didn't really think it was scary, it was more funny and worrying as if I was stuck in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with some of my dumbass friends, and the events in the film actually occured in real life, they would all die or get eaten by dogs etc.

I saw too much of my friend Alan in one of the characters. :S
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:58, Reply)
I really liked the first two Saw films, but they quickly went downhill
Hostel was recommended to me, so I duly watched it and haven't laughed so much for a long time.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:53, Reply)
See
I really didn't like the Saw films, I have only seen 1, 2 and 3, I don't think you could force me to watch any of the others. They're just terrible.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:02, Reply)
He wasn't too bad
I found it much better after watching the DVD extras which explained who he was and what happened in his earlier life.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:39, Reply)
For me, if a film has to rely on extras on the dvd to make the film more plausible then it has failed.

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:41, Reply)
A valid point

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:47, Reply)
Yeah
They didn't really touch on it too much in the film, perhaps they were trying to keep it short!?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:42, Reply)
that would be it
It made me feel quite sympathetic for Vincent to be honest. I felt a bit sad for Samara after watching The Ring as well.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:46, Reply)
Hehe
I felt sorry for Samara too, I got shouted at by a friend for being sympathetic towards the baddie. Hehe
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:50, Reply)
But she didn't mean to be the bad guy
it was only because of stuff that happened to her. I felt bad for her too.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:54, Reply)
That was my point too
They wern't having any of it. :(
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:59, Reply)
Same applies to 'The Grudge'

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:08, Reply)
Yup
I agree. There are quite a few films out there where you end up feeling sorry for the baddie.

My big example of this is Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Every time I watch it I want Alan Rickman to win.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:12, Reply)
Dark Water
is really very good, even the re-make was okay! :)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:37, Reply)
Sean Bean on a farm?
with lots of sheep jumping of cliffs? Was that Dark Water?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:12, Reply)
Hehe
Not quite! :)

uk.imdb.com/title/tt0382628/

Thats the re-make. It has a link to the original in there too somewhere.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:16, Reply)
Ah!!
I was thinking of this:

uk.imdb.com/title/tt0411267/
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:28, Reply)
House of 1000 Corpses
Halloween (Rob Zombie version)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (slasher goodness - both orignal and new versions)
Eden Lake (nasty!)
Outpost (Nazi zombie ghosts!)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:26, Reply)

Misery
Ravenous
[REC]
28 Days Later
Pan's Labyrinth (what Spanky said)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:26, Reply)
Oh Ravenous
That was a great film, I must watch it again soon.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:31, Reply)
Ravenous is indeed great
I don't really consider that horror though

more comedy
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:38, Reply)
It's a bit of both really
A bit like Evil Dead 3
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:44, Reply)
yeah
although evil dead 3 is more comedy
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:49, Reply)
It wouldn't be nearly as good
If it wasn't for the music.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:02, Reply)
In no order
An American Werewolf in London
Halloween (original)
Nightmare on Elm Street
Alien
The Sound of Music (well, it always makes me scream if I see it listed in the schedules)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:30, Reply)
Oh fuck
I totally forgot about
The Orphanage.

That is a scary, scary film.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:32, Reply)
Oi loikes it, oi do.

(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:46, Reply)
That is a super
film. Hehe took me ages to get you to watch it! :)
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:53, Reply)
BRILLIANT FILM
My spanish is pretty much:

"Un, dos, tres, toca la paré" :D
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 16:45, Reply)
Also
Wicker Man (original) still freaks the fuck out of me!
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:33, Reply)
I have a soft spot for old Hammer movies too.
Even though they're as tame as fuck now.

And Peter Cushing wiping out Christopher Lee in their version of Dracula is the coolest vampire slaying scene EVA!
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:35, Reply)
I have to agree
Hammer Horror films of the 50's and 60's are some of the best films ever made. They leave things to the imagination, nowadays you don't have to think about anything when you watck a film.

I think it's an age thing.
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 14:38, Reply)
Yup
But that bit in Dracula in particular, cos Pete’s like, all “I is gonna swing off this curtain an rip it down, exposing you to sunlight. And then I is gonna run across the table an’ grab two candlestick holders an’ hold them in the form of a cross until you is killed to DETH. An’ you, Christopher Lee, is gonna go “Arrrgh, I is turning to dust. You cunt; just wait until the sequel”.

Is that not
The Fearless Vampire Killers?
(, Wed 10 Jun 2009, 15:05, Reply)
Alternate names apparently.
I thought that too but I searched under Roman Polanski first.

Hmm, so many to choose from.
Probably plump for:

Halloween (original version, the 'theme' alone still gives me goosebumps)
Alien
The Thing
Saw
The Shining
