I just got a Samsung Tocco ultra but I am *really* tempted to swap it for an N96 under the 14 day returns thingy. Which would any of you say is the better phone? I'm not overly fussed about camera quality since I always have my trusty SLR with me which kicks the arse of any camera phone.

since it has Symbian and the 3.5mm headphone jack. But it's also a chunky bugger, usually on Symbian you have to manually shut down any app you use to stop it freezing, and I have to convert any films I wanna put on there before they work (I could download DivX but it always seems to be shite on Nokias).
On the other hand, the Tocco ultra has no wifi, a pretty basic OS and I'm still a bit unsure about touchscreen phones.

I can, sadly, imagine doing that myself.
I got rather distracted by a frog at the weekend.

Judgement on the N97 is reserved 'till I try it, but it has the full qwerty.
I'm tempted to play with the N97, I think that now it's got OviStore, I could be persuided to trade the iPhone.

An iPhone worshipping friend of mine was raving about it but I haven't the dickens what it is
( , Mon 22 Jun 2009, 12:17, Reply)

But they've seen the error of their ways and allowed widgets/mini-apps to allow intrigation into pretty much anything.
OviStore is an 'App Store' from Nokia.

The battery isn't so hot, but the latest firmware makes that slightly better.

pretty much chalk and cheese to compare I think, I've not had a great experience with Nokia recently, and I was a VIP member of their beta team (not b3ta).
Samsung make so-so phones, but then again, Nokia seem to do the same these days...

But I steadfastly refuse to get an iPhone, LGs are unreliable and after 10 years of using Nokias, I usually throw a fatty wobble when trying to use Motorolas and Sony Ericssons when it comes to texting.
It's a dilly of a pickle.

What are the main functions you're planning on using? the N96 has a telly and BBC iPlayer support, which is pretty nifty, plus a large range of software.
I don't like, anymore, S60's calendar/contact/email sync'ing, but I imagine it's still miles better than the Tocca (even though I've not played with that).

I just need it to be able to access "proper" internet for when I'm out and about and invariably lost. I could use wifi, since that'll keep my phone bill down.
I agree with the N97 coming out the N96 may well fall by the wayside, and I've heard the N96 feels kind of cheaply made. I had the N95 and N95 8GB and while they were good they did break easily. Having said that, the last high end Samsung I had (innov8) wound up in the shop 4 times in 6 months.

I had some software called Joikospot that allowed for me to turn the device into a wireless hotspot, to use my Touch to browse the web... it was a good sollution, but it killed the battery, and I wanted to go all-in-one, except now I'm going to have to get a Snapper Camera as the camera on the iPhone is shit... I'll wait a month or two and go for one with bluetooth in, so I can do all that uploading shit on the move.
I think, currently, the best sollution for an all-in-one would be the N97, but I've not used it yet, so am not entirely sure. I know the 5800's screen is shit, but the N97 uses a different one.
Then there is the Palm Pre if you want to wait a bit, and there is a "iphone killer" coming from Sony come late-auterm, if you don't mind waiting.

I'm a little apprehensive about that. I made the mistake of grabbing the first 8MP camera phone as soon as it landed and it was utter crap. In future I'll always buy the second of something.

Once you hit 7 or 8 mpx, it doesn't make too much of a differance above that... unless you're printing to A3ish size, in which case, you wouldn't use a snapper-camera, but the Idou will be hitting 12mpx with decent optics. It's the rest of the Idou's features that have my gadget-sense tingling.

Xperia X1 (made by HTC) its all of the awesome for what I use it for, but is overly complex for non-techies!

rubbing another man's rhubarb is as bad as trusting a Nokia? Can you give me a second fruit/friction based simile for the samsung to help me compare? You're making the most sense out of everyone so far.

you may find it leaves unsightly stains though, but it's your choice. I prefer to caress mine.

Suck. Period.
Ergh, you've reminded me that I have to lug one around, and may even have to use it. Sheesh.

It's in about the same market as the Tocco and N96.
It's a bit shit to be honest. The interface is slow, my fingers are shite at the touch screen and now the headphones don't work. Since it's not a 3.5mm jack then I can't simply use another set of headphones lying around.
I'm a bit gutted I didn't just sell my soul and go for the iphone. It's also the only phone out there that generally people coo over.

The best thing about Apple is the marketing team. Stick a lower case i in front of anything and people go catnip mental for it.
iShit anyone?
( , Mon 22 Jun 2009, 12:19, Reply)

Their marketing has been spectacularly successful.
I was hoping there would be a nerds alternative that would have twice the function but nowhere near the "style" of an iphone. Sadly I'm quite sure the fact remains that the iPhone is (by far) the best out there.

Full internet, easy to text with and the Windows OS is actually pretty good and logical.
And it has a torch on it. Which is the most useful thing (not actually being sarcastic there)
