Following on from my QOTW post I have a question... was there ever a toy that you really, really wanted when you were little but didn't ever get, if so what was it?
Or was there some toy that you wanted when you were a kid, brought as an adult and realised that it was actually quite shit!?

No one wanted to give Meccano sets to girls in the early 80s, damn their gender stereotyping. I got one for my 17th birthday instead and I loved it. I secretly still prefer Lego though.

You're right, it was a bit of a 'boys toy'.
I did get a 'boys toy' one Christmas. It was a massive truck and you could pull the drivers head off and fire it out of a catapult on the back of the car - that was a-mazing!! :D

it was great, but I couldn't build for shit. All my cars ended up looking like giant robot ants

My parents (probably correctly)said it was rubbish and I wouldn't use it.
I hated them for that.

I never got a Mr Frosty either! I posted about it and a few people said I wasn't missing out... I still want one though!! :(

And my mum's a bit OCD so everything I found had to be drenched in Dettol before it crossed the threshold.
Now I can find things and just bring 'em right home. Nobody to tell me that hub-cap is dirty, no siree.

as I coveted my mate's one hard. My birthday arrived - I think I was eleven - and a suspiciously truck-shaped gift was handed to me. My moment had arrived, it was going to be great. It's a truck! It's a robot!
Nope, it was a radio shaped like Optimus Prime. It didn't transform. I'd been given the gift of Radio 1 and Horizon 103.3FM.
I cried.

Maybe your parents thought that was what you wanted... all the Optimus Prime stuff sort of looked the same but transformed into different things!! Perhaps with the release of the new films you will get your truck! :D

But Marcus Bleens stole it in the playground and I was too scared of him to tell the teacher.

They were only ever released in the US though, which meant I never had a chance.
However, my 30th is rapidly approaching and there's eBay now. I've started dropping hints already!

I always wanted one, mainly because at the time, I was the only 5 year old girl without a barbie doll! And mum said she wouldn't let me have one because they don't make barbies with curly hair.
Yep. That was the reason she gave to five year old me.
Last year she told me it was because she thought they were ugly and I shouldn't want to have something just because everybody else does.

I never had a Barbie through choice. She had freaky hands and even as a kid I knew she was too thin. I had many Sindy dolls instead, they were pretty cool! :D

Quite liked Cindy when I was tiny.
Every year my dad's sisters would inflict two fresh Barbies upon me. I had no idea what to do with them.

I was treated like a bit of a freak for not liking Barbie. Sometimes I used to steal my brothers Action Man, camo up Sindy and go on a mission!! :D

I think I only wanted one because mum wouldn't let me have one and because everybody else already did.
I instead had a very tiny pink bear that went with my everywhere (it's the size of my palm. He's my good luck charm. There's a little patch on his tummy and nose where I used to rub my thumb when I was nervous that has no fur on it at all. I still have the little bear - he's been to new zealand and around aus and he's going to the UK next year too. He's well travelled. :P

and only a second, I read that as "he's been to new zealand and around anus"
He really would be well travelled then!
( , Tue 22 Sep 2009, 11:05, Reply)

yes he really would be - but no - he hasn't been around anus!

there was one Barbie. She had a retractable pole sticking out of the top of her head! Yes. Read that sentence again.
I was traumatised. Why??? She had on a white leatherette jumpsuit and a pole in her head, This was apparently supposed to make bouffants easier. I'm sure I didn't imagine this.
Trailer Trash Barbie?

Of course 'Retractable Pole Barbie, can scale walls using only her neck!!'
Do you remember Jem? She was truly outrageous, truly, truly, truly outrageous!

Rubbish.

Never got one though. To be fair, we'd destroyed a Tonka truck the year before.

I bought one last year. It was shit so I gave it to my Nephew.
I still want Starcom toys.
