It stars Kevin Costner and Demi (I can’t keep my clothes on) Moore? I was actually really surprised how much I liked it, plus it reminded me that Kevin Costner can actually act, I had forgotten this.
Have you seen any films recently that have pleasantly surprised you?

I thought it was brilliant. Michael Caine just keeps getting better.

want to see that at the cinema, it looks amazing!
Michael Caine is just a fantastic actor :)

but prepare yourself, it's not the happiest film in the world.
It has also had mixed reviews, IMDB has a score of 8.1/10, but The Times gave it 1 out of 5 stars.

I've read quite a bit about it, it does look like its not going to have a happy ending. :S
Bah, fuck The Times, I don't tend to read reviews in papers/magazines, they tend to be a bit up their own asses when it comes to reviewing movies.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:59, Reply)
the guardian review of Sin City completely slated it, and I thought it was fantastic
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:06, Reply)
what I thought! I really wasn't prepared for how good it was.
William Hurt was good too and I thought it was very clever the way they used him in the film.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:43, Reply)
but it was a useful plot device.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:45, Reply)
The second his daughter showed up I thought... oh here we go! But it was still a great film. Its also mega cheap to buy on DVD - under £5! Woo!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:48, Reply)
so you can show it to people and look like you know about great films and that.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:51, Reply)
I tend to like some really weird films, I recommend them and people tell me I'm nuts, ho-hum.
Have you seen Brick? That's a good film! :)
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:54, Reply)
like Joseph Gordon-Levitt so mainly brought it for him. Its very clever and really liked the style of the film, like an old detective movie!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:00, Reply)
I watched it at the weekend expecting it to be a fucking awful self serving pile of chickflick shit, but found I rather liked it.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:21, Reply)
But nobody would come with me because it looked like it was going to be a shit chick-flick.

Don't rule it out completely...there's a bit of a debate raging between certain biologists about "evolutionary psychology," i.e., whether or not we inherit personality traits from our parents. Obviously this offends a lot of people, particularly since it's at odds with the idea that we're all born equal, but there is a growing amount of evidence for the idea that certain characteristics "run in the family" - e.g., above- or below-average intelligence, aggressive behaviour, depression, other mental illnesses, even homosexuality (though this one runs less successfully for obvious reasons) - so they've probably done the usual scriptwriter's thing of taking a tentative theory and grossly over-extrapolating.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:28, Reply)
Secondly, inheriting charateristics and personality traits such as violence a lack of empathy etc, is totally different from inheriting behaviour patterns, like killing people.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:36, Reply)
That's why I said the scriptwriters would have grossly over-extrapolated. If anything, you'd probably expect an "inherited" behaviour pattern to be due to environmental influences than genetic, so not really "inherited" in the sense of the word we're discussing here.
And I admit my understanding of the distinction between inheriting character traits and evolutionary psychology is ropey (I realise the two are related but not the same), having not read all that much about it. I just thought I'd throw the idea in there for general interest.

Actually a hell of a lot funnier than I expected.
Saw 2012 on Sunday. As shit as expected.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:41, Reply)
That comes out on DVD this month and I can't wait! :)
Awww was 2012 shit? Bugger!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:44, Reply)
The first thing that crossed my mind is that there probably will be 2012 Saw films soon.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:58, Reply)
I was very pleased with it - I was expecting it to be good but Bill Murray came as a surprise.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:44, Reply)
I will be buying it when it comes out on DVD, I think I have missed my opportunity to see it at the cinema now!?
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:45, Reply)
I wanted to see Zombieland
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:46, Reply)
I say I'll go and just never get around to it! :(
I used to go once a week back when I worked around the corner from a Cineworld... I did see some shit films though! :S

Don't you wish you were me?
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:52, Reply)
I don't wish I was you, but I wish I had your ability to actually go to the cinema! :(

better than all the Harry Potter films because they got kids that can act.

my old teacher gave it to me. then I gave it to a girl called Susan

but the reluctant obsessive-compulsive neat-freak serial killer (so many hyphens) worked for me - going to Alcoholics Anon. to beat the addiction was a nice touch.
But Demi Moore as a hard-boiled cop with a trust fund? My arse.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:52, Reply)
I did think the whole 'hard-boiled cop with a trust fund' was funny... only because it made me think of Mike Laureeeee from Bad Boys!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:57, Reply)
but the latest Star Trek very much took me by surprise.
As did Dark Knight, for I was expecting yet another sequel to the franchise that steadily worsened throughout the 90s.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:54, Reply)
It was spectacular on a big screen and was the first film to tempt me into a cinema since the first LotR installment.
I bought Star Trek on Blu-Ray.
Just need a big HD telly to watch it on now
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:58, Reply)
I saw it there too, was worth every penny.
The effects are brilliant, the only real criticism I have is that Simon Pegg was introduced too late. Although he still made me laugh, as did Leonard Nimoy!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:01, Reply)
It was slated by the critics, but made me laugh hugely, was genius.
For those who don't know what it is, it's a CGI film, with the voice talents of John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, Eddie Izzard, etc. It has Buscemi playing the role of a suicidal, immortal rabbit (the role he was born to play).
Well worth a watch.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:55, Reply)
In fairness i hadn't seen it for about 12 years. Brilliant film, should form part of the training for every salesman, regardless of what they are selling.
In other news, the GFT in glasgow are screening Koyaanasqatsi, complete with live score at the end of the month. I haven't stopped quivering with delight.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:00, Reply)
We were prepared for a shower of shite, and I know it's never going to be an Oscar Winner, but I think it was just a Carry On Movie for the this decade. It's basically a boys film that goes, "Cor! Tasty girlies!" and "Eeergh! Gross!", and nothing else, but I thought there were some fun gags in there.
I know it's fashionable to hate Horne & Cordon at the moment, but I think people - especially the critics - took it waaaaaaaay too seriously.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:17, Reply)
...anything with Lesbians is usually worth a shot.
Apart from the Billie Jean King Story and suchlike.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 13:43, Reply)
House of Games. Quite a cool film that probably not many have seen. Nice plot!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:41, Reply)
ok that didn't work
Children of Men, picked it up cheap from Fopp and thought "meh looks fairly bog standard blah but i'll give it a go" 2 hours later "Holy fuck that was incredible!"
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 12:46, Reply)
I wasn't so fussed about it I have to say. It did go on and bloody on.
