Marijuana makes you less anxious, scientists find
www.newscientist.com/article/dn8155

Actually it's mostly talking about it stimulating cell growth in the brain, but that bit made of chuckle.

What stimulates your brain?

Dirty talk.

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:13, Reply)
marijuana definitely stimulates mine
stops me being anxious too

except when I get The Fear.

That doesn't happen often though.

My dissertation was on the affect of canaboids and opiods on appetite.

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:21, Reply)
What did you get for your dissertation?

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:22, Reply)

A nine bar and some black tar heroin

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:26, Reply)
what was your conclusion?
Cannabinoids have a positive effect, from experience (and is generally agreed by medicine these days, is it not?), opiates I've not had enough of to comment on - I've smoked opium a few times but never got the munchies.

Mine was on pre-Roman British religion - anything you need clearing up for you on that topic?
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:25, Reply)
Opioids increase consumption of food
canaboids increase motivation for finding food.
Block them both and the rats seem more interested in escaping and biting you.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:34, Reply)
mine was on Modelling the Impact of Mangrove Trees on Water Elevations in Riverine Basins
also, in case you need any help in that respect

Speaking of scientists...
My mum's just rung to say our Uni's Chemistry department has just exploded and as I'm 5 mins away, I can hear all the sirens.
If I'd been in work I'd have been in a building joined to that by one of those bridges that is like a corridor over the road. What ARE they called?
Anyway, there's nothing on the internet.
Can any of you lot find it?
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:22, Reply)
what uni is it?

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:25, Reply)
Liverpool
I'm starting to think my mum made it up.
I just listened to the headlines on the godawful station she listens to and there was nothing...
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:28, Reply)
as a civil engineer
I can tell you that those things are called a bridge.

edit: you could also call it a pedway, skyway, catwalk, but generally those would mean ones between skyscrapers or something
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:29, Reply)
Noooo, but it's a certain type
It has chairs and desks in it. It's like a room, connecting the two buildings, and it is a tunnelly tubey thing. It's not merely a bridge bridge. It's carpeted and has windows, but it's above the road.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:32, Reply)
coach house
no, really, just because something has rooms in it doesn't mean it's not a bridge.

In olden times big bridges in cities often had shops and stuff on them.

Bath still has some I believe.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:34, Reply)
the old London Bridge was very much that way

was a massive den of iniquity in those days - fucking marvellous.

Peter Ackroyd's London is a great book if you like that type of thing. The chapter on crime and punishment is astounding...

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:55, Reply)
Thing with steriotypes, is that they're normaly bassed on preseved truth.
For example, if I asked you to think of some kids hanging around on the street with knifes in their pocket, what type of jumper are they wearing? Yes, hoodies. Does that make all people who wear hoodies criminals? Nope, but just enough of them to create that perception.

Now, think up of people who smoke weed.

I'm not sayin' everyone turns to lazy good-for-nothings on the stuff, just that a lot of people do.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:43, Reply)
this is very true
it affects people in wildly different ways. I'm much the same when stoned, although more relaxed and less bored, whereas my bro is almost incapable of doing anything.

Definitely possible to carry on a productive life being stoned every night though
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:46, Reply)
depends massively on several factors
1. your general disposition in the first place
2. type of weed - the Dutch concept of 'daytime' and 'evening' smokes illustrates this perfectly
3. how much of the stuff you're getting through
4. what you do when stoned ie stare at a tv, or play an instrument/game etc
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:59, Reply)
Re daytime and nightime smokes...
I find if I smoke some block I can pick up a book and read - if I am smoking skunk pretty much anything that involves 'getting things done' is futile.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:37, Reply)
marijuana makes me stupid sleepy and sick
this place stimulates my brain, believe it or not.
It makes me strive to have proper spelling and gives me smug satisfaction when I correct my mates on their appalling spelling and diction.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:46, Reply)
does that to me
Haven't had any for years, doubt I'll bother again.
Had the same effect on my dad so he didn't bother either.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:49, Reply)
It only makes me sick if I have it after having booze.

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 13:58, Reply)
this happens a lot
I still get it badly after smoking for years. haven't thrown up for a while, but it makes me feel distinctly off.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:09, Reply)
I know a trick for this
as long as you're stoned before you start drinking as well, you should be OK.
Sober to drunk to stoned...to toilet, potentially.

Stoned to drunk to top-up stoned...should be OK provided bongs etc are not involved....
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:12, Reply)
this is why I normally have a couple of crafty ones before drinking
doesn't help

I think the problem is that I'm quite a lightweight when it comes to booze these days. If I'm having a smoke afterwards then 3-4 pints is my absolute limit. well, it should be. It never happens and I'll have 8 pints and a few jagers, have a couple of j's then lie in bed spinning for an hour or so until it is safe to close my eyes.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:14, Reply)
God I HATE that
Far be it from me to proselytise, but cocaine removes any possibility of getting 'the whirlies'...
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:25, Reply)
I'll bear that in mind

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:27, Reply)
what there is instead is potentially 'gipping'
when it starts to trickle down the back of your throat, it can make you feel a touch nauseated for a second. this can be aggravated by taking a massive toke at the wrong moment.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:33, Reply)
I have heard of this
and think I could cope
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:39, Reply)
it's a minor inconvenience at most

(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:41, Reply)
Or if you don't like charlie...
...an orange juice before bed stops whirlage.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:33, Reply)
seriously?
man, oranges have magic powers. they stop me getting twitchy if I have too much MSG as well
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:36, Reply)
Yes...
And you are right about the MSG. Always have some orange after Chinese food and you wont get the 4am jitters or the parched throat.

Trust me - I'm a doctor.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:39, Reply)
I am so trying the orange juice to stop the whirls thing
I'll need it on friday night as well.

awesome
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:40, Reply)
orange juice is also reputed
to help with bad trips - personally I think it's likely to be merely a placebo. If you're panicking and believe orange juice will 'save' you, chances are it will.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:41, Reply)
I have heard that...
One other OJ truism is that it counteracts the effect of methamphetamine - so if you have some good whizz or some bad E do not drink a juice or you will waste your money.
(, Wed 9 Dec 2009, 14:43, Reply)
nothing wrong with a placebo
if it works :-)

As time passes
and more research is done on cannabis, scientists are playing catch up and finally becoming more aware of the healing properties it has.

The cannabinoids that they are interested in most is the stuff that provides the body high. The stuff that relaxes you, lowers blood pressure and generally makes you fell better, a tonic, if you will.

The THC is the stuff that gives you The Fear, panic attacks, the mild hallucinations and just that general, 'shot out of a cannon' sensation that really strong puff can bestow.

I have had puff that have been heavily packed with cannibinoids and also stuff that seems to be primarily THC. The latter tends to leave me a dribbling wreck, contorted with imagined fears and general uneasiness, as if something terrible is JUST about to happen. However, if you are smoking this on a regular basis, the fear gives way to controlled euphoria, artistic inspiration and some serious rushes. The mainly cannabinoid strains tend to just mong me out, with little in the way of head rushes, giggles or anything to 'far out'.

Marijuana, like the Rasta's have always said, is sacred, and should be used more widely to heal the fractured minds and bodies of today's society.
