I just watched one of those "cash 'til payday" ads on the TV. As usual, there was the young housewife with not a hair out of place, in her pristine kitchen, tapping in to her laptop (which appeared to be wirelessly connected to the internet) adding up figures on a pad. Wryly she spoke to the camera about not having enough cash "this month" and peddling the short term loans from the obviously 'helpful' and 'easy to contact' company sponsoring the ad.
They were quoting an APR of 2356%.
TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY SIX PERCENT!
I'm in the wrong business.
Anyone else feel that this is all kinds of wrong?

I shall repost in reply that I once got a grubby business card through my door (in the East End) offering cash loans of between £10 and £300. It said something like 'no need to make payments at the bank - we will collect!'.
I was fucking scared just reading it. A £10 loan would be a grand in about an hour, and you'd be in the fucking canal within a week.
Gotta love them cockneys...

Or, 'provvy cheques' as they were known. The simpletons who took jobs going to collect the weekly amount from the proles who took them out where inevitably battered and their takings, taken.
An Xmas favourite that kept giving/taking well into the year after.

I looked for the decimal point, and it's definitely not there...

... turned up the Ts and Cs from an outfit called QuickQuid.
My emphasis
=====
Terms and Conditions apply. Finance charge will be between £10 and £14.75 per £50 borrowed. Typical 2356% APR. †Loan amounts are based on consumer's credit history and ability to repay loan. Not everyone may qualify for £1000 ‡QuickQuid performs traditional credit checks, while still accepting those with less-than-perfect credit. QuickQuid verifies applicant information via various national databases. §Funds will be deposited the same working day, if approved by 14:30. ¶Approval may take up to 30 minutes in most cases. Payday advances should be used for short-term financial needs only, not as a long-term financial solution. Customers with credit difficulties should seek credit counselling.

High tech loan sharks. I'm amazed this is legal.

you should think about consolidating all your debts into one low monthly repayment, quitting university and then doing one of your relatives up the arse.

You can always tell when you're in the sketchy part of town when you see the following:
-many fundamentalist churches
-lots of fast food places, especially fried chicken
-payday loans and check cashing services.
All three of the above prey on the poor mercilessly.

The only shop I know of that sells an Absinthe stronger than 80% is directly opposite one of those "payday loan" places. I think that this is not an accident.
