I'm going on holiday for a couple of weeks in a few weeks time
and I suspect I may need to take a lot of books with me.

Anyone know where I can buy books cheap online? I've tried the amazon market place stuff and it still works out at about £4 per book.

ebay
but you are genuinely better off having a hunt for a good bookshop depending on where you are.
Edit: does depend on what books you are after, but Oxfam bookshops often have a decent amount though heavily inclined towards classics and popular books.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:52, Reply)
I've bought all the books I want from the bookshops near me unfortunately

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:56, Reply)
also keep your eyes open for libraries closing down
and selling off old books. My dad used to do that- generally about 50pence a book and some absolute gems
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:58, Reply)
the library.

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:52, Reply)
they don't tend to have the sort of books I'm looking for

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:56, Reply)
They generally have a large selection of books.

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:57, Reply)
our library here isn't great

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:58, Reply)
You should go to a library in a civilized part of the country.

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:00, Reply)
I just searched the exeter library for some of the books I want
and it didn't have any

thought I'd search one in MK so I could say ha, your library doesn't have them either, but it does

damn it
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:03, Reply)
hahahahahahhahahahahaha
EDIT: I clicked that because it's awesome, but I doubt anyone else will.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:03, Reply)
thanks for your sympathy

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:05, Reply)
I generally find if someone says they'll click something, loads of other people click it too.
A lot like this. *click*
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:18, Reply)
people are sheeple

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:19, Reply)
There are a few specialist book stores in Soho that might have what you're after.
If you tell the guy with that tattoos that you "like the way the parrot winks", he'll get out the box with the really really good stuff that you can't buy, but are allowed to "Donate" to recieve.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:59, Reply)
I'd go with this
my local library allows you to borrow up to 15 books at a time. If you get in there now as well, there'll be plenty of time for you to order in anythng you can think of they don't have at the moment
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:56, Reply)
I wasn't aware that libraries ordered books in

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:58, Reply)
I think you may have been aiming for the main qotw there.

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:25, Reply)
i hate you

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:30, Reply)
thats not what you said last night

Apparently

Depends what you want.
The works usually have some nuggets amongst the dross. That way you can do the porkylips thing - read them and leave them. On line I've started using Abe Books, as long as you don't mind secondhand. Uk only sellers are usually ok.

You can also sometimes get lucky in Asda\Tesco if your required reading is in the paperback charts.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:52, Reply)
stuff I want generally isn't in the charts
secondhand is fine, so I'll check out abe books, thanks

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:55, Reply)
can't usually find a whole series in a charity shop
and as with the local second hand bookshops, I've already had everything I want from them, and check back on a regular basis
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:57, Reply)
My theory is you buy what's there, complete the series elsewhere and still end up ahead.
I was very lucky the other week. Someone had dumped about 20 warhammer books. Got them all for about £5. Some are shite some are by well respected authors. Kept my son occupied though.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:06, Reply)
I'm on the "complete the series elsewhere" stage
which is why I'm having a few issues
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:11, Reply)
library
it's free, and onnce you've read them, you just take them back

sorted
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:57, Reply)
I don't like giving books back

(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 12:58, Reply)
Same
which is why I'm wanted in three counties for theft
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:01, Reply)
I really am creeped out by library books.
The number of times I get well into a book then find unidentifiable stains on a page.......*Shudders*
However my local library has an extensive "Grafix" section and I am usually lucky enough to get previously unread copies.
Just as an aside, they had a copy of Bluntman and Chronic in the kiddies grafix section. Oh how I laughed.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:01, Reply)
It would help if you give some idea of what you are after
I remember a line from Porridge: "I read a book once...Green it was."

this. We can help search
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:09, Reply)
as usual a simple phone call might have helped me
I'm mainly looking for a bunch of Robin Hobb stuff: Ship of Destiny, and the Soldier Son trilogy.

I quite fancy all of the Robert Jordan Wheel of Time stuff, and Gateway by Frederick Pohl, and those JV Jones ones you mentioned the other day
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:14, Reply)
trust me
you really don't fancy the wheel of time books, its like trying to read the Tommyknockers 12 times in a row, hideous hideous stuff

The first JV jones trilogy is ok but if you haven't read the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie then you are a fool and your views on books are null and void until you do so
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:16, Reply)
I've read most of the wheel of time anyway
and so would like to know how it ends

trouble is I can't much remember what happened so far
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:17, Reply)
I gave up after number 6
and I think pretty much fuck all happened apart from that fucking nun woman repeating the same fucking phrase about 100 fucking times per book.

I can post you the jv jones and joe abercrombie stuff if you like.

Edit: and you can keep the JV jones stuff, or forward them to Poppet when she arrives
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:19, Reply)
I've read (or got) the first JV jones trilogy, it was another one whose name I forget that I'm after
the abercrombie stuff might be a goer though, I'll let you know how I get on. cheers
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:21, Reply)
The second J.V. Jones trilogy
is exponentially better than the first.
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:19, Reply)
Wheel of Time is a commitment
only series I've given up on.

As for the others. Search for reviews on ciao.co.uk. On the side they do price comparison. Just did it for Forest Mage (second Soldier Son) and they appear to have it listed for 81pence (plus 2.50 postage.)

I don't mind giving you the first Soldier Son or Gateway if you still can't find them at a later date
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:19, Reply)
the phone call I made to a place called world of books is promising
I could've got them all from them through amazon, but postage was £2.75 a piece, which seems like too much if they are all coming from the same place.

thanks for the offer, might have to take you up on it if I can't find them elsewhere

Wheel of Time is almost an afterthought really. there are others that I want, I just can't find my lists!
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:20, Reply)
no idea where you reside
but if it's near Bristol they have a massive Book barn place.

And yes you'd be welcome to them, if you can't find them decently priced. They're in alright condition.

Tried bookcrossing.com? People leaving books in public places and posting details on the website about where
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:39, Reply)
I'm in Exeter
so not that far from Bristol and in fact I will definitely be in and around Bristol before I go on holiday.

managed to pick up 9 of the books I'm after for £21.84 delivered, which isn't too bad
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:46, Reply)
that's pretty good
Amazon?

And the Book Barn is amazing. Absolutely gigantic, and they have nearly everything you can think of. Not hugely cheap, but well worth a visit
(, Fri 19 Mar 2010, 13:59, Reply)
me
tell me what you are looking for and I can post a selection to you with a return address if I have anything suitable.
