I am learning saxophone
There is a saxophone in my house right now.
(It's only on loan, but hey.)
So there, one of my childhood dreams has been achieved.
Last night I WAS the girl that my 11-year-old self wanted to be. I'm about ten years late but she forgives me.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:27, 3 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Ooo! I had an awful dream where I met a man from the internet and he was like totally urgh!
I had my sister and nephew with me though so that was ok. I had to pretend that I had a phone call telling me my mum was sick and we had to go and then I felt really guilty but relieved.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:33, Reply)
I'll never forgive you for blowing me out like that...

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:36, Reply)
I'd never blow you dear.

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:40, Reply)
I had a dream about sisters and hospitals
and exes and train stations and WH Smith.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:38, Reply)
This was caused by you gazzing me yesterday.
I fit your description precisely
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:41, Reply)
Could be.
But this guy wasn't even funny.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:44, Reply)
Still could be me.
If its any consolation, I didn't dream of you last night.

Even though I tried hard to.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:50, Reply)
Aw bless!
That's nice.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:59, Reply)
Man, I remember when I learnt sax
my uncle got one during his mid-life crisis and never used it. My Auntie, who knew I was musical gave me a lend and I nailed it in about a month. Hardest instrument I've learnt as it's not a chromatic based thingamyjig. I.e, the higher up you go, the higher the sound. Not the case with the saxamophone.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:35, Reply)
Fancy selling it to me?

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:39, Reply)
Not mine to sell :(
When my uncle heard I was doing rather well with it, he decided he wanted it back. He's never played it. He's just a cunt.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:53, Reply)
The cunt

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:54, Reply)
My step dad has one.
He can't play it. He just wanted to own one.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:56, Reply)
Can you get it for me & Rooty to share?

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:57, Reply)
I doubt it.
He's funny about his stuff.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:00, Reply)
Fucking rascist, Daily Mail reading, born-again cunt too.

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:57, Reply)
Morning, Roota!
How is the sexamophone coming along? (I never managed to master mine - as the Colonel says, it's probably due to the fact it's not on a nice chromatic doohicky like a guitar or a piano - so I hope someone is having the success I never found.)
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:41, Reply)
I can do a scale thingy in G or something and I can play one tune
I am being taught by a 13 year old girl and last night was my second lesson. We got told off for talking by her dad.
I could play recorder in school so I'm hoping the fingermebobs will come back to me.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 8:43, Reply)
You called?

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:04, Reply)
Haha!
Best puppets evah!
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:07, Reply)
YAY!

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:34, Reply)
A 13-year old girl?
So is she a friend who plays or is she an actual music teacher?

(I only ask as I've been wondering whether it's possible to teach an instrument if you can quite clearly play the thing but don't have any relevant qualifications other than GCSE music!)
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:27, Reply)
If you can play, you can teach.
Doesn't mean you'll be any good. I taught for a while but found it solid as a motherfucker. I found that just because I can play something, doesn't mean I can explain WHY I'm doing it or WHAT it is that I'm doing.

I think a syncopated paradiddle threw me...
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:32, Reply)
Yeah, I just wonder how many people would pay for lessons from an entirely self-taught bass guitarist
But I did have piano lessons for a couple of years, so I know my music theory pretty well. The only major drawback is I know I'd eventually have to teach someone slap bass, which is a style I find abhorrent.

You love that cartoon, don't you?
Fuck it, I might as well just add it to my profile...
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:40, Reply)
I do love it
it annoys me that I often get mistaken for a bass player, so I have to mock them constantly.

I don't think I look like a bass player, so why do people assume I am one? hmm?
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:42, Reply)
As I understand it, you're very large and very beardy.
Are you the 'quiet' type? Do you come across as the least 'up yourself' compared with your bandmates? These are all classic symptoms, says a clean-shaven bassist who has to talk the most at band practices.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:52, Reply)
good god no
I'm a typical big-headed lead guitarist.

Our bass player is unbelivably quiet and lanky. Everything a bass player should be.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:54, Reply)
I'm sure my band's back-to-front
We've got an insanely talent but absurdly modest lead guitarist - we have to keep telling him to turn up, which is a first as far as I'm concerned.

The bassist does the most talking, but then he is the lead vocalist as well. And appears to be more of a piss-artist than the drummer. But he at least has the best sense of humour.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:59, Reply)
It's the beard
Hairy fuckers, bass players.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:12, Reply)
everyone in my band has a beard :-P

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:18, Reply)
She just plays
But when we get serious and stop gossiping she's a good teacher. There's no structure but she won't let me have a sip of coffee or a cookie unless I do it right and she watches all the way through reminding me when I'm lapsing into lazy mistakes.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:36, Reply)
Haha, discipline might be another issue
I just know I'd be the first to get bored and suggest a tea break! (Or a vinegary-lemon break, depending on the results of the experiment.)
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:38, Reply)
Yeah but she says
"No, that sounded like a goose. One more and I'll pass your coffee Slow down and concentrate."
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:40, Reply)
Definitely a good teacher.
I may have to copy her style, especially if it means I could find amusing ways to insult any potential pupils - "E major? That sounding like a walrus farting chromatically!"
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:50, Reply)
Works for me.

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:52, Reply)
I think I'll have to insist that all applicants are thick-skinned and have a good sense of humour
And suddenly it starts to sound like a personal ad...
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:55, Reply)
"But Mr Crow,
why do I need my own house and car to learn saxomaphone from you?"
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:19, Reply)
of course it's possible to teach an instrument without qualifications
I don't have any guitar qualifications, have a D in GCSE music, and have taught, to some extent at least.

Fairly sure my guitar teacher had no qualifications, but he was a fucking good teacher.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:36, Reply)
Everybody who I've shown a few guitar chords to
and been a bit strict with has gone on to play like Jimi Bleedin Hendrix and I'm STILL pants.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:41, Reply)
that's unfortunate

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:44, Reply)
I have no ambition.
I go "I can comfortably play to this level. Any further would require too much pain and practise." *stops*
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:45, Reply)
I haven't 'practised' for years
playing with other people is the way to get better.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:47, Reply)
No, that just makes me sing and leave the guitar to them

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:48, Reply)
I couldn't agree with this more.
Surround yourself with musicians better than you and you will find yourself hauling ass to catch up. That's why I'm currently trying to find a jazz band to play in.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:51, Reply)
'jazz'

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:52, Reply)
Nice

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:00, Reply)
Would you want to play guitar and do you live in or near South London?

(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:55, Reply)
Yes I would and no I don't.
I'm a Brizzle boy I'm afraid.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 9:59, Reply)
Oh well
The violinist from my old jazz band was talking about trying to revive the project later this year, after she's moved house. We need a guitarist who would fit in with the 'electric gypsy' style we ended up with after several years of trying.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:01, Reply)
Bugger, that sounds good too...
I'm well into Django Reinhardt at the moment so could have got right into the gypsy jazz thing.
(, Wed 31 Mar 2010, 10:02, Reply)
Well, if you will insist on living in the wrong city...
