London Salary Advice - is 40k ok?
Possibly starting a new job in London in a couple of months, and in my initial interview they asked a couple of times would I be happy relocating to London (from Melbourne) for the salary I'd be getting.

I have no idea if 40k is a decent salary for working in London...seems ok to me? Any thoughts / advice about living in London etc?

It's a shit hot salary tbh.
Well, it's above the average, depends how old you are though tbh.

Alternative question:

Do you find it hard being very good looking as I do? Do you often find people follow you, just to complement your face?

40k
is pretty good. But in London you won't be able to go totally mental on it. It's an expensive city.
Look to share a place to save a bit, and have people to knock around with.
Most Ozzies I know love it over here.
So when you coming then?

Thanks.
And I'm Scottish, so know London to an extent, and in terms of the salary itself I reckon it's pretty good for my career path so far, I'm 30, and it's roughly 15k more than I've earned in the UK before (and more again than I'm earning here).

I guess I was thrown a little by her repeated questions about relocating and just how expensive London is, almost implying that I wouldn't be able to live comfortably on 40k...which of course I should be able to. Perhaps she thinks I'm on a lot more over here than I actually am, and she's American and I don't think she could place my accent!

I got by on 12,500 for the last few years in london, so you should be fine

She
is referring to 40k Sterling I assume, and not 40k AUD?

If it's the latter, then f*** me, no way.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 12:42, Reply)
Go for it.
That's not a bad salary at all, and you'll be able to have a fucking good time on it. Should you feel the need to spend the lot on MASSIVE DRUGS, give me a shout and I'll pop round and take them all for you.

That's not very responsible behaviour for a single parent

bertie, I know you think it's fun,
but stop baiting him. One day he may try to strangle you.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:02, Reply)

try to strangle you die from boredom
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:04, Reply)
It's also really lame

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:04, Reply)
I'm not trying to bait him
and I certainly don't think ot's fun, but this sad fuck followed me around the last couple of days posting weak insults about me being on the same website as a ' good friend' of his, and then got in a massive strop when I retaliated on the only thing I know about him.
When the 36 year old fuckwit finally has the sense to realise that all this is all just words on a screen, and that I really couldn't give a fuck about him or that lunatic Becky, then I will leave him alone.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:13, Reply)
but if you're retaliating then obviously he annoyed you
so you can't really say it's all just words on a screen when you don't take that advice yourself.
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:22, Reply)
He hasn't annoyed me at all
So far the best he's come up with is 'ur gay'.

I just love his really witty replies, the one above this is a classic

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:29, Reply)
Why on earth?
Why would you want to live in London when you are in Melbourne?
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 9:51, Reply)
Because they wouldn't let him move to Sydney

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 10:00, Reply)

Have you allowed for the increase in VAT?

(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 10:33, Reply)
No, and I neglected to deduct tax from his / her wages
I'm assuming as an international massive drug dealer he / she won't be paying tax
(, Thu 24 Jun 2010, 10:44, Reply)
It depends where you live
I was on £12.5K a year (untaxed) and survived in grotty flatshares in Camberwell. My other half started in London on £36K and we were able to move into a nice flat together in West London. He's on a bit more than that now, and has managed to support me and child in a decent (rented) house 45 minutes train journey from Liverpool St. We're hoping to be able to afford to buy somewhere one day once childcare costs drop a bit and my salary thus increases.

Also, whilst £40K is a good salary in the real world, in the City, it's peanuts. (Mr VitC is on not much more than £40K, in the City, and has been told he should be earning more like £55K for his job. Same job he did when it wasn't based near Liverpool St, and for some reason his delightful employers decided not to bother raising his salary when he moved to their company. His team leader just found out, 2 years on, and has promised a 'significant' pay rise. Similar in size to the one his team leader got 2 years ago. But it won't be backdated. We're not bitter at all... Especially when he's expected to be there 8-6 5 days a week, plus work all fucking hours available on his current project, and doesn't get any overtime pay. Grr.)
