I've just been asked to guest DJ at the local "alternative" club's student-y night
So my question is; what are the kids listening to nowadays? I want to do a decent job but am also keen to be reasonably drunk whilst doing it. And I really don't want to have to do any research. Some of you are young. Help please

I believe the young people are enamoured with this raucous style of music made by darkies in New Orleans
They call it "jazz" and I'm damned if it isn't some sort of negro slang for something immoral.

A spiritless body that's still talking,
It's to late to take procortions,
My whole world's fallen apart as easy as porcilin,
All because I didn't wear a hat when I fucked a yack,
Now I wish I never took her back to my flat,
And now I'm cursed from my dick to the hurst and there is nothing worst 'cus it hurts.

That's the sort of thing I'd play at my night
except for SOAD who are shit, but this is not the time to rehash that old argument
The night I'm doing on Saturday is a bit broader in scope so will be a mix of actual alternative with the stuff people who dress like the cast of Skins listen to. From my occasional visits to the night in question whilst plying my trade upstairs, a spot of hip-hop usually goes down well which is very encouraging

If you don't play 'Next Episode' or 'Still D.R.E.', you are dead to me. Same with any Queen tracks.
Killers are a good call too. Sadly you'll likely be required to play some Arctic Monkeys, or some wank like that too.
EDIT: Also, 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' should be the staple of every 'alternative' night, when you're kicking everyone out (as it's shit)

It's not about the audience it is all about self indulgent wankery.
So fuck 'em. They will all be on drugs anyway.

It's middle of the road 'alternative' stuff
Some of them have some decent tunes, and all of them have floorfillers.

how alternative we talking?
like heavy end of alternative, or bedwetting indie kids moodily swaying along to somethign that sounds like a cat being sodomised by a zx spectrum while a gaggle of snes's whack off in the background?
afaik, you can't go too wrong with a bit of hadouken, a smattering of dubstep. something like tek one, and maybe chrispy's inspector gadget dubstep remix for a bit of irony. oh and you don't play dubstep, you 'rinse it out' god alone knows what it's been covered in, but it apparently requires rinsing.
for what is generally accepted as credible hipster indie look at vice mag, and dry hump the same shoreditch losers they bum witless on a daily basis. let it be known i don't like any of this twaddle, i'm just being helpful(ish)
