It's cold and miserable, time to think about holidays
A friend and I are in discussions on where to go on holiday next year. He's the kind of person who loves odd adventure holidays, and one suggestion was spending 10 days on the Amazon helping a conservation society count the wildlife and measure frogs...

I'm trying to steer him more towards Japan, telling him we can climb Mt. Fuji and beat up ninja. I think he's up for that.

Where would you love to go on holiday?

This is a hippy post
my post about guns was better.

How much are you willing to spend on the holiday?
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:24, Reply)
What post about guns? I like guns
£1k or so I reckon.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:26, Reply)
I deleted it because I'm really nice and stuff
www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/26/futuristic_guns_feature/

I don't know what I'd do with £1k probably road trip on the East coast of the US
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:27, Reply)
Most kind, and I'll read that article cheers
He's already done a US road trip, but we both want to do Japan, so that's looking like the best option. Can only climb Fuji in July, giving me plenty of time to save.

Central and South America.

I'd love to do the Inca trail
And see Machu Picchu.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:28, Reply)
I'm not really much of a Pokemon fan to be honest.

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:29, Reply)
They have a fucking turnstile to get into Machu Picchu.
How crap is that.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:30, Reply)
Serious?
That makes me smile, but I'm not sure why!
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:36, Reply)
my friends did it
they said it's an exhausting trek, and when you get there after days of sweating and being bitten and peeing behind rocks, you are beyond shattered. then, just to cheer you up, coachloads of air-conditioned american tourists fall out of their luxury buses!
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:33, Reply)
Yes, nothing sounds better for a break from work to go work elsewhere
I want to go to India. Through cities, but also through the rural areas.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:28, Reply)
Back to Mexico again please
Fucking amazing, every second of it.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:28, Reply)
My girlfriend really wants to go to Mexico.
Mostly to eat.

Oh my God
The food was tremendous as was the proper all inclusive!!

Sri Lanka because my sister is from there and I fancy visiting some part of India.
Nearly got there once but had to cancel last minute due to the civil war shennanigans. Ended up in Thailand instead.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:29, Reply)
Damn Tamil Tigers...
Thailand's wonderful though, would go back there in a heartbeat.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:31, Reply)
those bastards made me miss my friend's wedding at st pauls cathedral with their protest last year
i was supposed to be doing a reading and everything. had to watch the ceremony through a grille on the ground floor, all dressed up for a wedding. the tourists thought i was mad.

i think they need to get their priorities sorted.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:35, Reply)
Confusing post
is confusing. How did the Tamil Tigers stop you getting into St Pauls if you were actually there?
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:38, Reply)
oh
because despite setting off 2 hours early to travel about 6 miles, the tigers' protest had blocked every single road you could think of. AND the tubes were out because of engineering works. it took about 2.5 hours.

so i got to the cathedral but it was too late and the wedding was underway.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:49, Reply)
ah, I see

My dad paid.
He wanted me to keep an eye on my mum. He thought she might wander off into the jungle and never be seen again : )

You'll get there eventually.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:36, Reply)
I may, now that I'm trying to stop drinking, take my money I'd typically spend on alcohol and give it to my dad to save for me

my ex said the music festival on mt fuji was AMAZING
depends on the holiday. if i only had 2 weeks, i'd have a week in tokoyo and a week in hawaii.

if work weren't an issue and i could have 3 weeks or more, i'd say a driving holiday down the coast of california and then across the states.

if i were taking a break to go travelling, south america for 3 months then australia and new zealand for 3 months.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:31, Reply)
My sister had a month in Thailand and Vietnam
Then a month in Aus and NZ, followed by a month in South America. She says it's the best thing she's ever done.

i really wish i had taken a year out to go travelling
instead i decided to spend 2 years in lawschool. wtf was i thinking.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:53, Reply)
Did that on the west coast of the US in the summer
*smugs the fuck up*

I can fully recommend it. Get a proper car though. Wanted a Camaro, had to settle for a drop top Mustang.

I'd love to go to Egypt, that's my dream holiday
But there's part of me that would love to go back to Lanzarote again, I went last year and really enjoyed it, best holiday I've ever had.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:31, Reply)
I have an awesome driving holiday planned
But I'll need several thousand pounds, several months off work and a suitable car in order to do it.

Sadly I currently have none of the above.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:33, Reply)
Mongol Rally?
If you do it, and you need another driver...I'll do it!
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:42, Reply)
No, the days
of Fiat Pandas and old Polos are long gone. It won't have quite the same attraction in a modern car that's quite capable of the distance.

I'm thinking about a round Europe job through the Swiss mountains and around the Riviera and stuff.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:53, Reply)
I'm in my holiday place at the moment, and I'm fucking LOVING it.
I walked through snow today. It hasn't settled, but it was all over my clothes. :D

I hate snow
I am currently residing in my own private vision of Hell. Still, I'm glad you're enjoying it.

to be fair though, my longjohns really do go up to my waist....

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:52, Reply)
If you're in the Midlands again next week
I'd imagine there'll still be enough to go sledging.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:43, Reply)
If I could afford to
I'd do the Mongol rally, or else fly out to India and travel my way around, through Nepal/Thailand/Cambodia/Indonesia etc and not come home again until I got bored, which I reckon would take a while. I'll probably never ever get to do it :(
I'm trying to persuade my sister to come to Morroco next year, half surfing, half Marrakech. I'll probably not get to do that either!
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:41, Reply)
The Mongol Rally?
Is that a load of spazzers driving cars too quickly?
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:42, Reply)
You drive from London to Mongolia
in a car that cost less than a grand or £500 or something (can't remember the details)

I'd love to do it.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:44, Reply)
Didn't CHCB do this?

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:46, Reply)
Yeah
Lucky wench *grumble mutter etc*
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:47, Reply)
They changed it recently
because Mongolia got fed up with importing a load of old bangers. Your car can cost whatever you like but I think it has to be under 1000cc (unless it's a comedy vehicle) and it has to be less than ten years old. Which takes some of the fun out of it!

I would love to go to the christmas markets in Germany
even though I generally dislike christmas and positively hate shopping.

I'm so complex.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 14:44, Reply)
You should
it's a lovely atmosphere and so pretty! I would recommend the one in Birmingham but frankly although it's run by genuine germans all the shoppers are cunts and it's insanely busy.

Oh and definitely back to Kos with DG and Tourettes.

Well
South America to start with. Next year will possibly be a month around the Canary Islands, so Mark can see them properly, but it all depends on where we're living.

I went to Porto Del Carmen in Lanzarote last year
Touristy as hell, but I loved it.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:07, Reply)
There are few places in Lanzarote that aren't turistic
but it's very pretty. I hope my brother can come with us, as he was living there for 2 years and knows the place perfectly.

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:28, Reply)
Ahh, not El Hierro

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:33, Reply)
Oh, c'mon!
There are not even 2" of snow around London and they have started cancelling flights from Gatwick. Really? Does the country have to come to a still everytime a bit of snow falls? Tens of countries manage with 10 times more snow. We've been told for weeks that it's going to snow.

I don't think it affects my flight, but it's still unbelivable.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:13, Reply)
Heathrow and gatwick have flights taking off and landing every 90 or so seconds.
They cancel some flights so they have a chance to grit the runways every hour or so.

It's perfectly believable.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:28, Reply)
If it's like that, then yes
But that's not what you see on the news. However, I'd understand better if they delayed the flights so they can grit the runways, rather than cancelling them.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:30, Reply)
Then everyone would be delayed.
I figure it's better for them to cancel some and then the other planes take off on time.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:33, Reply)
But that's unfair
to the people who has them cancelled.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:34, Reply)
Then everything would just get progressively later until the system falls apart
They start off cancelling UK internal flights because people can use trains instead. Then northern europe, and so on. It does make sense.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:35, Reply)
Then why has London City shut?

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:30, Reply)
Because it's shit.

(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:31, Reply)
because it has a very short runway and no margin for error, what with it being in the river.
So if it gets slippy they don't risk it.

Plus I imagine there is a visibility issue.

Mind you, Embra airport was shut all yesterday and that has quite a lot of snow facilities.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:33, Reply)
It's not a great excuse
But we don't get it regularly enough to have the infrastructure in place to cope with it. It's not worth Gatwick's while to have loads of snow clearing equipment and de-icing stuff that would be redundant every other year. Plus, most places that have serious snow don't have the flight densities that Gatwick and Heathrow do.

Same argument goes for road snowploughs, gritters etc etc.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:31, Reply)
I think it is worth it
Last year they lost loads of money. A lot more than would have been to buy the clearing equipment.

Same argument goes for all of the country having to stop for 1 or 2 weeks.

It's been 3 years on a row, now. I'd think that is quite regular.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:34, Reply)
It's not, or they would have bought it.
One thing these people have is a sound business sense, even if it seems not. If it was worth it financially they would have bought them

It's not just buying the kit. It's storing it, maintaining it, paying trained operators who may only work for 2 weeks a year, etc etc

It's only been 2 bad years, and it's only been a week so far this time. Before that, there was probably 10-15 years with no serious disruption in the south east
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:38, Reply)
you should see grenada
you aren't allowed on the runway at all if it is raining. it rains ALMOST EVERY DAY! we were delayed for about 3 hours waiting for the rain to stop, most annoying.

also when we went to florida last year, we landed back in manchester with all the snow. the steward said that the day before the same plane had been stuck on the runway for 8 hours because of health and safety concerns about ice on the runway, and they had run out of food/drinks etc. can you imagine... a 9 hour flight and then 8 hours stuck on the runway, how horrendous.
(, Tue 30 Nov 2010, 15:42, Reply)
I've wanted to visit the middle east for ages.
I'd like to see more of India as well. I've never had a sun holiday but a mate recently went to La Reunion and it looked lovely.

I got an opportunity to work in India for a year
but it'd be without Mark, so I won't go for it. It'd be good, though, I'd love it.
