Text messaging
I never type in text-speak, including in my text messages, even with a word limit. If what I am trying to say takes more than one text then so be it.

Subsequently, I got dumped after a row focused around me not putting X's on the end of my texts; it just seems like a waste of time to me. I spoke to a female friend and she felt I was in the wrong too: 'don't you realise how much a girl will over-analyse a text if there is no x?'

I still don't really understand, but I have learned my lesson.

Actually, not at all.
I'm sorry to be blunt, but I was pretty fucking close to my aunt. I know it's an observation that several comedians have made for a while, but I have first hand experience.

and she got with this guy and they started putting xxx at the end of each sentance even when typing on MSN. it got to the point where she was so used to doing it, she'd just do it to everyone she spoke to.

I run a rugby team - every week when I send out texts asking players to confirm their availability for Saturday, I get three or four back with kisses at the end. Either force of habit or I appeal to a certain type...

Having got into this habit myself
I accidentally ended a text to my boss with "XOXO" the other day when I was confirming my availability for some overtime. That prompted a 12 hour shift of pisstaking from him but hopefully it'll be forgotten by the time I'm back in on Saturday.

I texted a female friend a month ago wanting to hang out and saying that I was bored (with an exclamation mark) this was interpreted literally and she had a massive go at me saying I only contacted her when I was bored. This was patently not true and have no idea where it came from as she only told me the offense it caused her the other day. It was particularly harsh as it's exactly what she does! Pot. Kettle. Black.

We're not friends anymore. This accusation was the straw that broke the camel's back with me with regards to her personality and I told her exactly what I thought of her. Didn't go down well, but it's no great loss.

So many female friends have told me off for sending texts 'without kisses on'. Why? I don't want to go shoving my tongue down all of their collective throats, so I won't go wantonly throwing declarations of affection around as if they are going out of fashion.
