This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

Facebook, et al
Friends Reunited is excused from this one, but why do people you haven't seen for 15-20 years and wouldn't recognise on the street add you as friends?

It's doubly perplexing when you barely knew them at school. I get friend requests from people I probably exchanged a grand total of four words with almost 2 decades ago.

Are they playing some sort of "I've got more friends than you" game with someone? Classmate Pokémon?

Yes.
Yes they are.

Personally, I find it extremely satisfying to "reject" people: we never got on at school, why the hell do they want to get in contact now? Oh yeah, to boost their friend numbers and try and look popular.

I tend to accept
then see what they are doing

then I can feel smug that I'm better than them.

then I delete them

These people
just like to think they've overcome their social paranoias and decide to re-capture the youth they missed out on by hoping their old schoolmates will find out what they're up to.

That's exactly what they are doing
"look at me, I have 400 friends on facebook". Really? Would any of them meet you down the pub tonight if you contacted them? No? Well they're not your fucking friends then. Grr.

Cut off point
You know the person, they have 250 friends plus. That's an awful lot of social networking. What is the cut off point for thinking "This knobber is literally adding everyone he's ever glanced at!"

Thank you
for the term "Classmate Pokémon".

Look on the positive side
Look at this way - you have the contact details of them, their work, etc.

Feel free to settle any old scores, repay debts, etc.

Where did I put that molotov cocktail?

"then I delete them"
Ah, if only it worked in reality.

"Ah, if only it worked in reality."
It does work in reality. Quite good, actually.

As long as you don't leave any evidence.
