The CageAt school we were allowed off the premises for lunch when we got to GCSE years 10 and 11.. A big responsibility, which we regularly abused.
Over the road was a park that had an unusual piece of climbing apparatus known to pupils as ..."The Cage!" It was basically a dome shaped climbing frame with a hole at the top which was pretty much the only way in and out, especially as we were too old to use it and couldn't fit through the bars.
It was in this colloseum that scores were setteled in gladiatorial combat. "You stole my pencil case/fags/girlfriend" etc.. Let's take it to the cage.
The two (or sometimes 3 or more) combatants would enter through the "Portal of Doom" and then fight until they were either completely knackered or their ties had been ripped and they had a nose bleed. Meantime, masses of blood-thirsty school pupils would cling to the sides of the cage looking in at the carnage and flinging globules of spit at the combatants. It was not dissimilar to Mad Max 3, Beyond Thunderdome.
Looking back.. that was both the worst and best thing about school.. As was "Jungle Rules Football". During playground football someone would scream Jungle Rules! and then the name of the game was there were no rules. You could pick the ball up, punch, kick your way to the goal. Like rugby come to think of it. This game was also affectionately known as "Injury Time", after the "Brutal Sports Football" game that was doing the rounds on everyones Amiga at the time. Ah good times.. great times.. the best.
