But JJ if you are actually looking at this (rather than entering a witness relocation programme and severing all ties to the internet), try contacting Microsoft.
They do seem really flexible warranty-wise for RROD incidents - I ended up getting a brand new machine for my second hand 360 when it got RROD a couple of years ago, despite the fact that it was a) outside the 5 year extended cover they give RROD, and b) second hand through a totally non-MS accredited purches.
Microsoft in "top notch customer service" shocker.

Still, can't argue with getting a replacement machine in such circumstances.
and similarly, I got a replacement hard drive from seagate in the same way.

I was gobsmacked.
I don't know if I caught one of their reps on a really good day or what, but straight after the initial phone conversation (where I said it was second hand - no bullshitting on my part, they just took the serial number and ID'd it from that) they emailed me a prepaid postage voucher to send it to them, and within 3 days I had a phone call from them saying "it's an old machine, we generally don't bother repairing them, so there's a new unit on its way to you".
