# Dunno but I need suggestions too.
42' 720p Plasmas, £450: Panasonic or LG?
My old telly died today. And as usual the internet is a clusterfuck of adlinks instead of any useful info.

# i bought a 32" panasonic last week and im very happy with it
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:30, archived)
# Panasonic
and try to get a 1080p at that size if you can afford a little extra, it makes a big difference
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:32, archived)
# Maybe, but this is already stretching the budget till it squeaks. Won't settle for an LCD though - not enough contrast.
Personally I doubt I'll see much difference from across the room, and I won't be buying Blu-Ray or a PS3 for quite a while. The Wii only manages component anyway, not HD.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:36, archived)
# if you're getting a 42" go for 1080p 100htz refresh rate
my lg 32" works great at 720p..and upscales to 1080 for ps3
(and I wouldn't get plasma..lcd's are better from what I've heard)

# I've got...
...a telly.

It's in colour.

And it makes sounds.

# I had a telly

it was in colour and it made sounds

and it was such an ugly piece of furniture that when it started smelling of burnt cable one evening

I threw it out, never got a new and never looked back.

# samsung
but I don't think they do plasmas

I got a new 40" sammy last week and it's outstanding

# i got a 32" samsung a couple of months back
and it's fantastic. at that size it doesn't desperately matter if you're running at 720 or 1080 but this supports 1920x1080 from a computer both in the hdmi/dvi input and in the vga input. the contrast is good and the colours are crisp. i'm very happy with it.

# A 'sammy'?!?!
A frickin' 'sammy'?!?!?!

What next?

# Our telly is 15 years old and going strong.
I don't see the point of getting a flat screen, as it won't last 5 minutes before breaking, no doubt.

Mrs Vagabond's sister's got a 48' widescreen HD USB Wingwang Overdrive Mentalist, and they've had to replace it 3 times in the past 7 months.

I don't think I know anyone with a flatscreen without a similar story.

It's just more landfill sold in the name of football.

It's probably the last thing I'll sell. :(

# I think some people just get unlucky, I don't know anyone who's had such problems with flatscreens

# I have
but it's too dull to go into

Apart from getting Toshiba to refund me on a telly that two years out of warranty

# 3 years with not a single issue
EDIT: and i can't stand football

# I bought a 24" dell monitor a couple of years back
I think its all i'll ever need

# this
I'm hoping I can ease myself into the world of fancy flat screens before my currently 13yo trusty 32 inch widescreen gives out. I don't want to have to rush into anything.

Mind you there's nothing I watch that would be enhanced by HD.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:56, archived)
# Yeah, my Samsung 32" broke just recently.
Cost about £130 to fix it. :(

# Try visit a few online stores (amazon and the like)
See what people say about them who own them, that's what I go on if I don't know someone who owns a product.

As Ad7 said, best to go for 1080p at that screen size; if you can't afford it, get a smaller screen (38" maybe?) with 1080p. It really does make a difference.

Does it have to be plasma? They are very power-hungry. This might be worth a read asia.cnet.com/buyingguides/home_av/0,39066264,61985379-3,00.htm

# I got my tv from richersounds...they do a great 5yr cover plan and they're cheaper than most
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:51, archived)
# They're the ones I was looking at with the newer LG 42PJ650. They're 20 miles away in Reading.
But Comet have just advertised the Panasonic P42X20B for £450.
A review of that suggest it's spoiled by reflections, but this might just be someone who's come from an LCD rather than a CRT.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:56, archived)
# Comet's probably not the cheapest place, plus you have to deal with the sales twats
Incidentally, I was in John Lewis in Kingston the other day, listening to one of their sales guys basically put a customer off buying an iMac. I walked away chuckling to myself.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:01, archived)
# well I've had no issues with my 32" LG lcd :)
if I'd had the money I'd have went for a bigger screen,
but 32" is just peachy for me.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:04, archived)
# AVforums is a good place too
they have real techy geeks on there, along with a few fanboys, but the knowledge is fantastic
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:07, archived)
# I have a 32 inch Samsung LED
tis proper good. More expensive than Plasmas, but doesn't bugger up after 2 years.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 12:53, archived)
# Yep LED is much better
Cheaper in the long run I expect; they are much more energy efficient, so the leccy bills will be a bit smaller

# £316 !!!!!!
I hope to buy a new pc before Xmas but want 1920*1080 to view my camcorder footage.
I'm considering this monitor www.amazon.co.uk/Iiyama-E2710HDSD-B1-display-widescreen-speakers/dp/B00337P71O/ref=sr_1_17/278-8030551-3233260?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280837806&sr=1-17
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:19, archived)
# It was about £200 when I bought it, but it's a damn good quality screen, tons of features as well
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:56, archived)
# the massive apple cinema screens or whatever they call them
they're lovely. absurdly expensive, but lovely.

i'm going to save up a fortune and then spunk it all on a mac pro with a massive, massive cinema screen, and then sit happily in my penury.

edit: store.apple.com/us/product/M9179LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1OTQ fuck me, $1,800 for a monitor??
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:06, archived)
# That one's being discontinued now
They're replacing it with a 27" version of this from what I hear
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:17, archived)
# Hmm
I was going to say "pity" but actually I don't really need a 30" monitor, I think a couple of 27" inchers is more than enough to me.

/insert obligatory cock jokes here

Also I just souped up the current soon-to-be-replaced-if-we-believe-the-rumours Mac Pro to the hilt but without all the pointless software packages. About £12,000. Not $12,000 but £12,000. That's quite a bit of money.
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:20, archived)
# Yeah the 12-core anticipated one will probably be even more costly at top spec
I wonder how many people have bought the £12000 one
(, Tue 3 Aug 2010, 13:55, archived)
# 74
