The two are pretty well entirely unique.
Watch the film - it is absolutely excellent. Very different from the book - it stands alone, almost as it's own story (hence King and Kubrick falling out about it).

i much, much prefer the film to the book
and that's a rarity since normally stephen king films are a bit shit (obvious exceptions being shawshank and stand by me). but the book to me seems really weak at the end, while the film is superb.
