Also, an oddly timed-encounter with a Painted Dragon the other day:

# arf!
hmm, i'm in a lord of the rings mood, but i can't decide.
fellowship of the ring
the two towers
or
return of the king?
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 20:33, archived)
# Fellowship is the best of the trilogy.
The 2nd one's Hobbits on horses, and the last one's Hobbits have a shitty holiday.

# My favourite bit in the whole book
was always Eowyn saying "I am no man" and killing the nazgul. Although I think they shifted that to the third film.

# yep, they did
and i love that bit too

Also, avoid the green jelly cheat battle in the third one, which never occurred in the book.

# but it won't take 3 hours to read
and i've got fuck all to do except some knitting
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 20:47, archived)
# Could always try digging out the radio version of Lord of the Rings
There's thirteen hours of it and it does a much better job of retaining the spirit (and story) of the books than the films. Plus you can knit at the same time, if you wanted.

# i'm not overly fond of radio that isn't music
that said, i love a bit of classic fm
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 21:01, archived)
# i'll watch fellowship of the ring tonight
and hopefully the other 2 tomorrow and wednesday.
i know i do this about once every 2 months, but i love those films!

# ?
Classic FM is music...
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 21:06, archived)
# that's what i'm saying
i'm not fond of radio that's talking, but i like listening to music on it. just like there are very few music videos i will watch as i find it distracts me from the music.
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 21:09, archived)
# There is music in it
They set a whole load of the poetry and songs to music as part of the production, something which was sadly lacking from the movies, plus there's the incidentals. Musically, it sounds rather good. I think it was done mostly with a string quartet, but I could be wrong about that.

Just found an example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5YwMpSN6CU&feature=related

# i'll have to listen to that tomorrow
when i can get to a computer that hasn't got youtubeophobia :(
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 21:16, archived)
# Oh that ^ very much
I used to have all that on tape; it's lovely. Really creepy nazgul sounds as I recall.
(, Mon 14 Nov 2011, 21:03, archived)
# I think it does get repeated occasionally...
Keep an eye on Radio 4 Extra; that's where it's likely to turn up. Of course, there's also bits of it on Youtube as well.
