I haven't seen it in ages.

It was like 1970s bitter.

2.8% but actually quite nice

# I've got some bottles of JW Lees dark mild at home.
2.8% abv, beer doesn't have to be strong to be ace. Strong beer has bred a culture of pissed up knobheads. We should go back to drinking large quantities of weaker beer. People don't fight as much when they have a gallonage of beer sloshing around in them.
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 13:47, archived)
# agreed
but with the price rises of recent years, people want to get moore booze for their buck.

If I only had £5 to my name, I would likely spend it on 3L of strong cider rather than 10L of weak beer

# Skol is ace
it would be my preferred drink, only my local offy keeps running out as their supplier does not stock a lot of it as its "not popular" really? the fact that the local offys keep running out seems to be wasted on them.

# I bought some Tesco Value Whiskey once
the stuff with a label made in Microsoft Word which they don't seem to sell anymore.

It wasn't very nice.
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 13:48, archived)
# Classy. Asda used to sell one called Prince Charles and
it was fucking awful, I mean worse than Teachers or Bells.
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 13:54, archived)
# Both Teachers and Bells were a step up from this stuff
We ended up mixing it with raspberry juice and Dr Pepper but no matter what you added to it the sour, graveyard undertones would come through on the aftertaste and leave you wondering what damage you were doing to your stomach. And eyesight.

I'm trying to track down a photo of the bottle but no luck. The label was completely plain, with bold Times New Roman, "Scotch Whisky" or "Whisky", I forget which. Nothing else. It was amazing, the Tesco Value brand was a step up.

I'm going to try and find it again next time I'm back in Blighty.

# I think I might have seen some of that.
The vodka is the worst one though. It looks like it should be on a shelf in B&Q.

# I used to use the gin from that cheap'n'nasty range
to make sloe gin. It was just about acceptable for that.

Mind you, I was a povvo student, and knew no better.

# well now you've stepped from 8yo blends to single malts
that is a huuuuuge difference!

I miss my old job :(

I really like Laphroaig, but it's an acquired taste.
Also, anyone putting soft drinks in whisky should be shot

# If we're talking blends, Black Grouse is a lovely smooth drink,
with some of the smoky flavour of the Islay single malts. I've currently got a bottle on the go, plus a bottle of Dalwhinnie and a Speyside.
And I started on a bottle of Mount Gay rum the other night, for those mornings when I want a more tropical sort of hangover. My liver is fucked.
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 14:25, archived)
# We all like a bit of mount gay, eh?
I hear that, my liver is begging for mercy
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 14:27, archived)

indeed, the mother of all hangovers

# I like Chivas as a blend
Nicer than some single malts. I'm looking at *you*, Glenfiddich.
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 14:57, archived)
# I don't work for them any more
but I can honestly say that I love Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. Perhaps because I have been to the distillery and seen it made and even drunk straight from the cask at 75% alcohol! I've also shared a personal bottle with David Stewart, but mainly perhaps because I used to get it for free. Lots of it. Wish I'd saved some now!
(, Thu 11 Oct 2012, 15:09, archived)
# To be fair my distaste for Glenfiddich is entirely for el cheapo 8 year old they filled pubs with ten years back
I've drunk the 12 year, 15 year and 18 year and they're all really nice whiskies.
