# The American emergency number works in the UK
Dial 911 and you get put through to 999
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:07, archived)
# really?
wow. I know 112 does.
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:10, archived)
# Yep
999 works here
911 works in the US
112 works across all of Europe

But as an extra 'gesture' they also divert the American emergency number too, so in the UK all three work
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:14, archived)
# I didn't know that.
But I'm not going to try it to find out if you're right.

Knowing the people on this message board, if I dial 911 because you've told us this 'fact' I'll only get I Love Horses or the sound effects for meatspin.

# Plus it's nawty!
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:23, archived)
# 112 is the international emergency number. You can dial it from a locked mobile, or one without a sim card.
Try it if I'm not too many hours late for someone to read this.
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 13:17, archived)
# Works in australia too

# You're thinking of 112,
which as any American would point out, is the week before.

Just had a thought. 6/6/06, when the forces of good (us) and evil (US) come into alignment and agree that it's the sixth of June. Hmmm...
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:10, archived)
# Is that you,
Robert Killjoy-Silk? ;-)
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:07, archived)
# Hmmm.
Is that a dig at me or are you suggesting that Americans are actually stupid enough to believe this?

I have no idea so I shall just concentrate on the bit where you say you love me dearly ;)

Edit: Hang on a minute, I've seen lots of films, surely the number would actually be 555-911?
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:08, archived)
# I do love you dearly!
And that's the main point.

...but at the same time, whether someone is stupid enough to believe it or not (and obviously it's more likely to be 'not' since it's an obvious joke) I have a real belief in '999/911/112' being one of the few sacred things in life.

Edit: PFFFT! yeah, you're right actually. My mistake ;)

# *curtsey*
In that case I appologise for offending you. That certainly wasn't the bit of the post which I thought would offend anyone!
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:16, archived)
# Aww, it's not that you offended me
Just one of those things I guess.

I was actually once sat for 45 minutes waiting for ambulance with a 90 odd year old who had a massive head injury, being held open by a blood clot. She was coated head to foot, and pretty weak to begin with. It was 1am, and the only reason the ambulance wasn't there within minutes was because they'd been sent out to a group of drunken youths who thought it would be hilarious to call 999. Not knowing what was wrong, and hearing that one of them was unconscious, they dispatched the only ambulance currently within range at that time of the morning, and then got stuck there with a load of drunken kids getting arsey.
(, Mon 11 Sep 2006, 11:21, archived)
# Fully agree with you on that point.
They're doing a new number for people who phone the police for stupid things. But I guess that won't stop drunk idiots like that.

They should be allowed to beat people like that with sticks until they actually need the ambulance they called for.
