# when I was in China a while ago
I was in a bar in a city in the centre of the country. They brought us a big bowl of peanuts and some chopsticks and sat around laughing at us trying to eat them.

I did always wonder how a nation that could invent tea, gunpowder and empires while we were pretty much still in mudhuts failed to come up with something better to eat with than two twigs.

that they're so good with them! I used to go out with a Chinese lass, and it was always faintly amusing to see her trying to eat with a knife and fork... food everywhere

I'd like to see someone eat a steak with chopsticks.

# how to eat steak with chopsticks:
1. Spear steak with chopstick to hold steady on plate.

2. Take other chopstick, insert end-on, almost all the way through steak.

3. Remove first chopstick.

4. Eat Meat lollipop. (not an innuendo)

# If you eat
the food ni the proper Chinese way of lifting the bowl up, then it's really quick. You basically shovel it into your face. Trying to get it from the table to your mouth is not as easy.

# China is vastly larger than the UK
and it had irt's imperialist ambitions long before England did, it was mostly land based expansion to the west, and south into viet nam, as opposed to England's later land grabs which were based more on naval dominance.

Even before expansion, but more so after, China had a huge landmass, with a huge and almost entirely rural population. Realistically, the amount of smtihing and metalwork required to provide metal utensils would be wildly impractical, when an efficient and cheaply available alternative has been available for millenia. Bear in mind that chopsticks suit the food (rather than english curry shop versions which are heavier on rice and meats), and that they were in use while most european peasnats would have ate with their hanbds - mass produced metal cutlery is a relatively recent privelege, and woudl have been the preserve of the wealthy for a long time.

Methinks you're being jingoistic rather than realistic. Also, what will you do if you ever visit China or Asia for travel or work - tell them off?
