how do you save with a transparent background in photoshop?
I am having difficulty

Save as a png also

Save as a .gif or .png
and tick the transparency option ;)
/think it's under "save for web"

depends what you're saving
save for web
select gif as file type and it should have a transparency checkbox me thinks

you might also need to hide the background layer if you've selected to have a coloured background

then as a .png, then tick transparency. i think

select everything EXCEPT what you want to be transparent*
copy it
create a new transparent layer
delete the current layer
paste
*or select the transparent bits, right-click and invert selection
