I've seen quite a few in my days
the widest was at least 10,000 pixels wide, and there were some equally high ones.

Those file sizes are ridiculously large.
Do you reckon you could optimize them or link them please for the sake of dialup and capped broadband users? The faq recommends 50kb as the upper limit for still images.
