# rubbish
i still have tapes that i play
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:37, archived)
# alas it is the end.
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6634553.stm

much like when NME announced the death of vinyl back in about 1993.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:38, archived)
# hmm
it seems home taping will not be killing music after all.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:40, archived)
# alas no
nor shall cd ripping or mp3's be killing an industry with such huge profits.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:41, archived)
# Damn.
you think I should get my Fischer Studio twindeck on ebay this week then?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:40, archived)
# Do you mean
Fisher Price?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:41, archived)
# pfft
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:43, archived)
# haha.
I had some of that as well I think ( or might have been my sister, her being the younger 'un )

I've loads of 70's and 80's hardware. I'm a hoarder of the stuff. Ols analog Marantz amps that can knock socks of my Denon. sigh, they don't make 'em like that any more.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:47, archived)
# I was born in 1982
And I remember holding my first CD (may have been Bat out of Hell) and going 'oooh...the future!!'
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:49, archived)
# when i got my first cd player
i didn't know which way up to put the disc in
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:50, archived)
# the normally print on one side
indicating which way it should go up.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:52, archived)
# even so
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:53, archived)
# I've only had a DVD player for about a year
and it still feels odd not to rewind at the end of every movie...
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:57, archived)
# I remember the first time I saw 8 track
and thought Jesus, that's cool! I'm a bit older than you ;)
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:55, archived)
# can you still get the valves for them?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:51, archived)
# I doubt it very much
which saddens me as it kind of stops me using them in case they blow up and I can't use them?? eh?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:54, archived)
# you actualy can get them i think
they are just more expensive.

i've seen some nice new valve based stereos, but alas they are way out of my price range for a simple home system.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:57, archived)
# I'm sure if I chased
up at RS components there might be stuff available. I'd hope so. It's such a different sound.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:58, archived)
# my old school
had a load of valves knocking around, are they valuable?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:01, archived)
# I doubt it very much
valves were never cheap but price is all about demand and there is little of that now. Modern valve tech is quite a bit different and the old stuff is not interchangeable.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:04, archived)
# I still use my Marantz equipment
It's true that they don't make 'em like that anymore.
High-street quality amps are certainly miles cheaper than they used to be and on the whole, they sound miles cheaper too.
And speakers? My bit fat Mission 3-ways from 1985 still sound ace.
I remember when this was all fields...
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:01, archived)
# hehe, speakers.
My Jamo 365's are still doing the job some 16 years after I bought them.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:10, archived)
# Was the same with Dixons and film cameras
Yet you can still buy them easily. I don't think the staff are trained to handle difficult questions about anything more than 3 weeks old :)
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:40, archived)
# Best thing with Dixons
is to ignore them. Anyone intrested in film, esp 35mm or above goes to Jessops or similar anyway.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:48, archived)
# Exactly,
though Dixons were idiots at pricing things so you could usually rip them off easily ;)
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:49, archived)
# Jessops is on verge of bankruptcy (I'm waiting for big liquidation sale)
medium format and a scanner is 100 times better than digital camera
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:20, archived)
# That all depends on your digital camera.
I have a few compacts plus an SLR. I have 4 SLR35mm and over 20 lenses collecting dust in the wardrobe. I will never use them again. It's just obsolete.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 16:02, archived)
# I went to skool
with the son of the Jessops 'empire' and for his 18th he got a 911 with plate JES 50P.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 16:09, archived)
# hahah
i have to admit to thinking that had already happened, back when they stopped selling VCRs
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:41, archived)
# *falls to knees*
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:42, archived)
# i first head that in waynes world 2
and yet, hmv still sell em..
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:43, archived)
# vinyl is worthwhile
but tapes were only ever a stopgap format
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:46, archived)
# just like minidisc
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:59, archived)
# me too.
but thats because the boss went out and bought the only Focus in the world without a cd player.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:38, archived)
# hahaha
i bet he had to pay extra for it's 'retro' stylin'
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:40, archived)
# probably, knowing how wank ford dealers are
i think my sister still has an 8 Track player in the attic. When I finally get my hands on another classic car, i shall be wanting to fit that.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:43, archived)
# if you're going to be putting audio equipment into it
you might want to buy one rather than just putting your hands on it... unless you live in a society with different rules regarding ownership
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:44, archived)
# oh you shit
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:46, archived)
# you know he probably does?
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:48, archived)
# ah
you see buying cars is something i avoid. i wait until other people are so sick of them that they are willing to give them away.

the other option i go for is "short term ownership":

pay 50 quid for an imminent MOT failure wreck, run for six to 9 months, weigh it in for 30 quid scrap. bargain!
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:47, archived)
# you shouldn't need to pay to have them scrapped these days
new regs and all that
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:50, archived)
# no....
i take the wreck to the scrappy.
he gives me 30 quid.
the car gets crushed*
profit**!

*neatly disposing of the body in the boot too!
**for a given value of profit.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 14:53, archived)
# That has not happened in 10 years.
The cheeky bastards make you pat to take it off your hands.
(, Tue 8 May 2007, 15:12, archived)
# I'm with you on that
Living in London, my car was just for heavy shopping and local trips.
My best was a clapped out Rover 213. I bought it for 250 pounds and kept it for almost 4 years. Only replaced the brake pads and chucked in a bit of oil on the odd occassion.
The only reason it failed its MOT was because of rust.
