# So, if Human yawns are infectious, and we yawn when we see people yawning,
What about Cats?
I've seen cats yawn. If there is a big crowd of cats hanging out and one of them yawns, do all the other cats yawn?
(, Fri 20 Jul 2007, 23:54, archived)
# did you yawn when the cat yawned?

# Not had a cat for ages,

# I think this calls for a scientific experiment.
It absolutely must be done.
(, Fri 20 Jul 2007, 23:57, archived)
# Science says
that you yawn to equilize the pressure inside your eardrum to the exterior one. This causes a drop of the external pressure, which is felt by everyone in the room. That's why everyone is now forced to yawn in order to compensate.

FACT!

# yes
any situation in which the geometry and displacing effect of ones mouth or ears is not described can lead to severe confusion and loss of appetite

# hmm
I always thought it was the brain signaling to the body that there is a lack of Oxygen in the blood stream and increasing the airflow to the broncule and holding it there for a few seconds to compensate .... learn something new every day

EDIT... Bloody medical training fails again

# But,
that's just made-up facts.

dit: and I hate it around philadephia. The only thing you can do there is avoid getting lyme disease.

# there are many theories about yawning.
some are mentioned here, and then there's the whole 'cools off your brain' theory. they are all likely nonsense.
(, Sat 21 Jul 2007, 0:22, archived)
# Oi!
Stop questioning my science! If your science says otherwise, then your science is fucking wrong!
;)

# Research has shown that with primates (humans included)
a yawn evolved as a silent mechanism to warn others of potential danger. The return yawn was acknowledgment.

While this is no longer of use to humans, our system is still set up that way.

# I thought it was a method in introducing extra Oxygen into the brain.
Other people see it, and do the same, so that the herd has extra Oxygen, or extra alertness, so we can fight \ flee from baddies (like pirates)
(, Sat 21 Jul 2007, 0:02, archived)
# Also,
it acts as a method of Cooling the brain, which makes it more alert.
(, Sat 21 Jul 2007, 0:03, archived)
# Yep, this^
It's true I just checked :P

# hmmm
At least you read the FAQ.
It doesn't include other things which tend to get frowned upon though, such as TOAP (Text On A Picture).
Bandwagons are a matter of personal taste. I subscribe to the view that if you see a bandwagon, it's too late - you've missed it, but some people like them.

The real trick to longevity around here is to have a thick skin.

# toap you say?
of the 30ish images I can see on this page, 24 have TOAP in one form or another so it can't be THAT much of a misdemeanor...
