# A bloke wot I live with
is a support tech for a very large ISP. Two days ago, he downloaded an infected file and ran it without checking it for viruses.

It's quite amusing sitting on the opposite side of a room to someone when their harddisk gets formatted against their will.

# its not
a program, its abuse of the inbuilt windows messenger service, thers an advertising program you send them with to a roup of ips
(, Tue 18 Feb 2003, 1:38, archived)
# Nope.
It's an integral part of Windows. There's something in the registry (I think) to turn this "feature" off though.

# yeah.
i didnt even think of it as being part of windows messenger. the pooter admins at my school turned it off becasue we would all use it for fun and stuff. hmmmm. now if only i could figure it out.....

# not
that windows messenger *SMUG* IRUN the school system - im not supposed to, me and a friend just have compltee network control over users, settings and programs - but SHH!

# Depending on what OS you're on...
... find servces and turn off the messenger service. Only have XP to hand, Control Panel->Admin Tools-> Component Services... etc...
Turn that fucker OFF. If you don't know what it is, you don't need it (it has nothing to do with windows messenger or anything of that ilk).

# Add a rule
to Sygate to block the messenger service port.

I doubt that Sygate would have used to but no longer does block them.
(, Tue 18 Feb 2003, 1:55, archived)
# See above....
... just kill the service... Unless someone can justify having it running...?
(, Tue 18 Feb 2003, 1:58, archived)
# Well my theory
is that it has a legit purpose (ie not spam) which is why it's a part of windows. So I say leave it in place just block the port to stop messages coming in from the interweb.
