It may be a jape by his work colleagues
The one which my work "mates" did to me where they swap all the keys on your keyboard and mess with your head.
What they didn't realise is that I touchtype and very rarely look at my keyboard. So I didn't notice the "hilarious" prank until they pointed it out to me. Twunts!

a better 'jape' is the swap the 1 2 3 buttons with the 7 8 9 buttons on a phone.
perhaps you should do that to them.
