goodness,
/talk is talking about the same thing

"The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008."

It doesn't really start doing anything interesting for a while yet.
They're just turning it on to check stuff works.
The fun begins next year I believe, when they actually begin firing particles.

Well they'll have to start the SPS before the LHC.
Next year you say? Ugh, what a wait.

They fire a beam containing packets of Protons at a beam containing packets of Anti-Protons.

Synchrotron is a type of Radiation. The SPS, or Super Proton Synchrotron, is a smaller circular collider which will inject the particle beams into the LHC.
The particles actually go through a few colliders before entering the main 25km ring. I believe they're initially accelerated by a linear collider.

Hahaha you sweetie.
No, but the wife did leave our electric hob on, and the pan and colander on the hob next to it recently. The long handle of the colander started to melt, and kind of looks like an alien face from one angle now.

Something in "Nwe Scientist"
I'm a non-sciencey prole, so that's where I get all my information. I then simply add rhetoric so I sound like I know what I'm talking about and ought to be believed.
