# New Saturday night game show 'in the public interest.'
(, Wed 7 Oct 2009, 11:13, archived)
# pikeys on spikes
I'd watch that
(, Wed 7 Oct 2009, 11:13, archived)
# ^this
There's a bunch of them breeding next door but one from me, if they need contestants.

They're up to four kids already, and have turned the front yard into their own personal scrap yard.

Thank god they're only renting. Presumably when Mr. Pikey manges to get Mrs. Pikey up the duff again, the council will pay for them to move to a larger premesis. Hopefuly this will happen before they buy a fucking pit bull.

# I read that in the Guardian
the lady concerned wouldn't answer my comment when I pointed out that Frank Gallagher describes the whole cast of Shameless as pikeys in the opening credits of every episode, yet she only got it together to write an article when Hammond implied that he might be one in Top Gear...but then the Guardian love to knock Top Gear and anyone that watches it

# "Pikey" is an abbreviation of "turnpike"
and, as such, derives from a reference to itinerant labourers in the 17th and 18th centuries ("turnpike riders", IIRC). It's got connotations of snobbery, but I don't see the racism...

# Travellers are a race now
which is why you can't say gyppo either
(, Wed 7 Oct 2009, 11:31, archived)
# funny that.
When the "Gyp" in Gypsie comes from "Egyptian", and has nothing to do with the races who currently claim the term.
(, Wed 7 Oct 2009, 11:34, archived)
# Traveller and gypsy are different.
"Gypsy" is a contraction of "Egyptian", which is where members of this particular nomadic community were mistakenly thought to originate when they arrived in England in the 16th century. (In fact, they're from northern India originally; yep: the English response was "Darkies all look the same to me" even then....)

There's nothing ethnically determinate about a traveller.
