www.imdb.com/title/tt1179031/
Starts as a standard US movie, then, well, then it becomes good.

You've just been watching the wrong ones.
This year so far I've really enjoyed Birdman, Whiplash, Big Hero 6 and John Wick and I haven't even been making much of an effort to see stuff.

Birdman and Big Hero were tops, not got round to the other two yet

but it appears I saw them in January.
John Wick is great if you want a good old-fashioned revenge flick.

Directors who don't understand its strengths and more importantly its limitations do.
I'm not sure I've heard anyone seriously decry CGI as a bad thing in and of itself for about five years now.

especially when people are going on about how the new star wars is all practical effects - it isn't by a long shot

Because I'm sure I'd have heard if they'd managed to build a Millennium Falcon that actually flew.

Though, I'd argue limitation has always been an important aspect of creativity. CG allowing people to show more-or-less anything probably stops people searching for more interesting visual solutions.

I get what you're saying about finding interesting work arounds, but the ability to fly a camera through a solid pane of glass to continue a dialogue unbroken is ace.

...that just redefines the practice of good film-making slightly. Limitation is still an important part of the creativity because if a director chooses to use CG to create "more-or-less anything", and does it badly/unconvincingly, he has failed in many beholding eyes. Learning how to use it wisely and combining it with practical effects & in-frame reference material introduces a new set of creative limitations for a talented director.

in essence yes, but 1- green screen isn't really the same a cgi and 2- this guy's examples of "good" cgi are pretty poor examples at times.
