This is a normal post Is there a law
stating that all how-to videos must be 12 times longer than they need to be?
(, Tue 10 Dec 2024, 19:33, Reply)
This is a normal post Yes. There’s also a US federal statute that they must all start with “hey guys!”
I wish someone would train an AI to convert how-to videos into pages of illustrated instructions.

For me it’s worst for game guides. Sometimes I want to find every little collectible and all I can find is a ten minute video instead of the screenshot of the map with a circle on it, which is all I really needed.

This is a normal post Just use the visual search and scroll through the video
handy when they haven't bothered with chapters

This is a normal post Information like this belongs in a diagram or illustrated guide,
but I wouldn't trust AI to create procedures for humans to follow until it gets a little more I.

This is a normal post Like there is a law stating that all tech connected video makers
have to use the phrase "Let's get started"

This is a normal post The algorithm rewards you for making longer content.
Therefore 5s of information is conveyed in 12 minutes.

I seem to remember the cutoff for monetisation was 20 minutes, which is why you always saw videos of 20 minutes and 10 seconds or so - in case YouTube's re-encoding fuckery shortened it under the cutoff.
(, Tue 10 Dec 2024, 20:42, Reply)
This is a normal post 20 mins used to be
The length a video had to be before it got midroll ads shoved in it, so the "just over 20 minute" videos were creators essentially opting-in to midroll ads (and the extra revenue)

Of course these days, youtube will happily shovel 2 sets of midroll ads into a 6 minute video whether you like it or not.

I tried to watch something without adblock recently, and I swear there were more minutes of unskippable ads than there were actual uploaded content
(, Wed 11 Dec 2024, 12:57, Reply)
This is a normal post The current rule is 8 minutes if you want mid-roll ad monetization.
So the slop content creators all tend to put out videos just over 8mins long.

This is a normal post It wouldn’t be so bad…
…if nine out of ten of the ads I’ve seen recently weren’t for that fucking Sonic the Hedgehog film.

My. God. Never again.

This is a normal post I'd quite like a chatbrb
that mindlessly creates unpopular acid, many-fingered gorn art, and tells nazis and edgelords to kill themselves.

This is a normal post Has b3ta always been this grouchy?
Seems like the comments on everything are more curmudgeonly than I remembered?

In any case, though I'd agree the video is a little long, thanks for posting - a good find - this would make a good print workshop activity : )

This is a normal post Thanks! I thought it looked like a simple bit of crafting that might appeal.
Not always this grouchy, they were young once and carefree but now can't sleep for more than a few hours at a time and have to get up in the middle of the night to pee.

This is a normal post I've blocked just a couple of people and I couldn't see what you were referring to..
Then I opened up the whole thread in a private window and what you mentioned, and the cause, got clarified.
I've found that by blocking the odd prick, I really don't miss anything. Their posts don't get shown unless somehow it's on a popular page, but it does mean that any threads that start with said prick's post (or one of their replies) get hidden from your regular timeline. Some is echo-chamber and some is like watching a particularly belligerent pig enjoying the mud fight. I don't know much about George Bernard Shaw but he hit that nail rather squarely.
Tbh, you don't miss anything good and the toxicity is almost completely gone. In this case, I saw your reply because it was on a 'clean' thread. For my sins, I can't help getting wound up by the wilfully ignorant, so to paraphrase; If it doesn't add net value to your life, let it go.

If someone whose work/words that I enjoy posts in reply on such a thread, you initially don't see it, again unless it's been voted up. However, it's looking increasingly like some don't post there because they have either already blocked them too and can't see the thread, or they realise that their work is getting less exposure there..
It's been months, if not a lot more, that I've had brb in particular blocked and this is the first time that I've engaged in a thread involving him in that time. In this moment, right now, I'm reminded of the negative effect that it can have on the site and on me, Some people are irredeemable and want to start a fight in an empty room so, after some needless fomo, I can safety say that my b3ta world is back to the more reasonable place I enjoyed before.

This is a normal post Hiya gorgeous
I was thinking I need my own natty phrase like yours for spammers.
I'm thinking either
"Well, good for you" ( a la Andy Hamilton in Old Harry's Game )
or
"You must be very proud" a la posh totty in Four Weddings.

Big wet Xmas kisses to you and all the Fadge Family.

This is a normal post It used to be much worse.
Loads of culture warriors spreading bigotry under the banner of puerile banter going unchallenged. The kind of people who label anti-racism as toxic. Thank goodness they all seem to have gone quiet.
