The old format of replying in QOTW OT
Could we have it back please? We find our style of chatting is better suited to having all the new posts at the end. This saves us from having to scroll around to see the new posts. We prefer having a single multi-topiced chat rather than constantly branching off all over the place.

But just with a
reply button at the bottom, thanks.

Sorry if we're being ungrateful Rob.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:02, Reply)
Oh look
I can reply to this one here too!
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:03, Reply)
HELLO

(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:06, Reply)
Hi!
*inserts penis*
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:08, Reply)
Not in my ear again!
My brain is being forced out by your fetid spunks!
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:10, Reply)
Oh okay then
*inserts nasally*

Do you think this topic will be taken less seriously if it's mostly taken up with our sex talk?
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:11, Reply)
I'm certainly hoping so.
To be honest, it took them months to do anything about our suggestions for off topic, so it'll be a while before they do anything again, I think. Not that I'm complaining, I appreciate that they're trying different things, all for our benefit.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:14, Reply)
It is nice to see some changes
They made the front page bigger too, which is also good.

Anyway, hold still, i'm going in through the ocular cavity this time.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:16, Reply)
I second this
with the chance to have the reply button at the bottom if possible. We don't really want a /talk format. This format was set up for QOTWers who don't like to use /talk.

Rob, thanks though. Really. We love this place far too much for our own good.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:03, Reply)
agreed.
Infact I find /talk completely impossible to follow. QOTW is far nicer.
Maybe im just simple minded.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 7:51, Reply)
It's nice to try it
but it doesn't really work in a QOTW stylee.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:03, Reply)
it was good to give it a try
but it seems that a lot of us aren't getting on well with it, and there is quite a danger that it will spoil the community that we've built up.

it was working fine before, despite what the /talkers would have everyone believe.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:04, Reply)
Reply button at bottom good
/talk format bad!

Thanks for the trial though now we know we don't like it :p
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:05, Reply)
It's not /talk format
It's upside-down /talk, their most recent posts appear at the top of the page, not the bottom

:C
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:06, Reply)
As others have said
thanks for the trial, now we know we don't like it. But we appreciate the effort you put into making changes to b3ta.

Anyway, here are some constructive suggestions I once made for improving QOTW.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:11, Reply)
Agrees
with a reply button at the bottom for ease of scrollage. Please and thank you
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:15, Reply)
Sorry to disagree
but I'm loving the new format. I find it easier to follow.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:21, Reply)
Interesting exercise
But another vote for a return to the old stylee right here.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 22:41, Reply)
Please put it back
as it was.
I think the request for it to be changed was made by someone who doesn't post much on OT anyway.

A reply button at the bottom would be nice.

But please, change it back.

*edit* I've just tried to read the HSH thread and I just don't like it.
It's hard to have a conversation and it's far too confusing.

What will it take to put it back?
I can offer biscuits or tits.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:04, Reply)
I'll swap you tits
For a Hob-Knob.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:43, Reply)
I have chocolate hobnobs
but only it it goes back how it was!
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:45, Reply)
Oh...
So I'll stop replying like this then?
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:46, Reply)
I disagree.
This is a far better system and makes much more sense.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:46, Reply)
@Kaol
You are only going to get biscuits or boobage if you have the power to put things back as they were!
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:49, Reply)
Hmmm...
I'll see what I can do.
Being awesome, boobage isn't such an issue though.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:50, Reply)
@ Kaol
just biscuits then.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:51, Reply)
Yeah.
Please.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:53, Reply)
My brain doesn't work well with this
It nearly made me cry.

It didn't quite, but nearly.
(, Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:57, Reply)
but you can still post the old way
what's the problem?
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 1:38, Reply)
@gilgers
Yeah but it's more fun to whine like a little bitch.

@mike
I don't really, I just like to pretend I have Crippling Undiagnosed Apergers so I get some attention and sympathy, online
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 7:35, Reply)
I agree, and disagree
both at the same time.

The new format does actually make more sense. However, it's not what we're used to, so it's difficult to follow multiple conversations as they could be going on all over the page. And the page can get very big.

At least with the old format, there's only one stream of conversation. There may be people replying to each other with reference to other comments further up, but at least it's a linear stream.

The new format is non-linear, insofar as it's branched, so you have to be able to follow numerous different conversational threads.

Overall then, I'd prefer the old version.

Of course, it could be left as is, and we can just use it in the old style by clicking the reply button at the top of the page.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 8:28, Reply)
I like it
Just needs the new post highlighting thing to work and I'd be perfectly happy as it's so much easier to follow the branched conversations then.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 9:47, Reply)
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese
Change it back.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 10:06, Reply)
I shall also have to add my plea for the old style
Perhaps I'm just not good with change, but I preferred the old method of single-thread conversation. The joy of Off-Topic was that if you wanted a different conversation, you could just start a new thread, rather than having several branching conversations that somehow intertwined. I think it just fits our idiom better.

May be aggrandising qotw a little much by suggesting we have an 'idiom.'
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 11:04, Reply)
agreed
back to the old way please.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 11:06, Reply)
change it back, for the love of god
this nested shit fucking sucks.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 12:51, Reply)
also
in justification of my above remarks, I'd like to add that reading replies on a mobile phone becomes really bloody difficult when they start to nest and go right off the right hand side of the screen after about 2 replies.

Linear replying for the mobile phone win.

(Edit: QOTW needs restoring too...)
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 13:26, Reply)
I like the old way too
call me a boring old fart, but .... there ya go!
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 14:03, Reply)
thank you for thinking of us
but please put it back to the way it was. we liked it.

although the reply button at the bottom is very helpful, granted.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 14:31, Reply)
The more I use it
The more I think the old way is far superior for threads that get the size of the Home Sweet Home ones. The smaller random other threads it's ok for but not really all that much better than it was before.

It's not so bad for the main QOTW though imo.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 16:31, Reply)
yeah, and
if you're hanging around and want to see which thread is where the people are, the old linear style with its dependable reply count was a good way of keeping tabs on things. if the replies-to-replies-to-replies aren't included, it's easy to get all lost and bewildered. which is why we don't do /talk, because it's easy to get lost and bewildered (and abused)
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 18:11, Reply)
And another reason to gripe
I've just come back from work. Normally our thread of the day is the HSH thread. So having just come home I look for that thread. Can't see one with the HSH logo. So the next thing to look for is the thread with a lot of replies. The only thing I can see one with 72. So I thought there was no one about as the replies during the day normally come to about 250.
However it would seem that there are about that many replies on the thread with 72 but they don't show up.
So I got lost and confused.

Please please please put it back.

Thank you
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 18:36, Reply)
Thank you guys
nice to know there was someone listening.

Sorry we all got a bit whiney.
(, Mon 15 Sep 2008, 19:19, Reply)
Thanks b3ta hamsters
I appreciate your restoration of the old system. There's still /talk for those who liked the new system.
