Sorry, that thread has gone a bit dead...
I watched Charlie Brooker's Review of 2010 last night. I was worried marriage would dull his bile ridden rants, but I'm happy to see that this is not the case.

One of the things he mentioned in his review was some of the good TV from last year, including Sherlock, a series I found to be fucking excellent.

So, I ask you this, what is the best series you've ever seen? Mine is either Hitler, The Rise Of Evil or Jekyll.

Alt Q: What series do you hate, that others seem to adore? Mine is The Mighty Boosh, load of shite it is.

Also, I've found the female Lab
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:08, 119 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I thought his Review was lacking a bit
he's definitely gone a bit damp squibbish since that grobbling little article in the Guardian.
No idea what my favourite series is. Supernatural always stands a rewatch though.

Alt Q: I really and truly haven't figured out the fuss over The Inbetweeners. Pure, unmitigated dross
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:12, Reply)
I agree, Inbetweeners is utter shit.

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:16, Reply)
Which grobbling little article?
Alt Q: What does grobbling mean?

EDIT: According to Urban Dictionary: "Mixture of grappling and groping. Groping using your whole body"
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:49, Reply)
I thought I had made grobbling up
it seemed to express it precisely- a cross between measely, grovelling and flimsy.

His choice not to continue on (and in lots of way very admirable.) He's still pouring out the same old watered down pulp though
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:58, Reply)
The Wire is the best
I hate 24, CSI, Angel and Buffy.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:12, Reply)
Angel and Buffy have featured nearly all of my favourite women between the 2 series
I think they're fucking superb.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:17, Reply)
Regardless of clunge content the programmes themselves were bollocks imo.

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:24, Reply)
Alt: Coronation Street.
I hate it with a passion even though I haven't been subjected to an episode since I lived at home and my mum was an avid viewer.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:16, Reply)
I'm fortunate to have only ever watched one episode in my life.

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:17, Reply)
You're bloody lucky then.
Unmitigated shite that it is. A street populated by 'strong, feisty non nonsense wimmin' and blokes who are either effete, hapless and slightly in touch with their feminine sides (but not enough to be considered as strong and feisty and no nonsense), or utter bastards.

Utter fucking wank.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:20, Reply)
Don't sit on the fence about this Pa
tell us what you really think
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:33, Reply)
It's what gay men think 'ordinary life' is about.
And not a darkie in sight, either.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:35, Reply)
hahaha
roll on March :)
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:36, Reply)
This reminds me of an episode I saw of QAF
when all the gay men are in the straight pub and wondering if this is what real life is like
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:43, Reply)
I also find it quite incredible
that a programme which was created by a raving bumder, has a massive following of the Crow persuasion, and of which a significant proportion of writers were also good with colours, took over 35 years to actually introduce a character who's sexual preferences were, quite frankly, horrifically perverse to you and me but which, nevertheless in an enlightened world, should be afforded some publicity in a modern drama serial.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:49, Reply)
I've never seen any Coronation Street
Having grown up in a house without television. I assume you're talking about the well-know 'Corrie' character Scotty McWeeber who was a scat-fetishist with tendencies towards furrie-bukkake?
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:52, Reply)
I don't know the names.
I just got a general gist of some storylines due to working in offices with an off-kilter woman to man employment ratio.

"Eeh, that new lad in Corrie's a poof, ye knaa"
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:54, Reply)
I made Scotty McWeeber up :(*
*I sincerely hope anyway
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:55, Reply)
Dr. Who, obviously.
Alt: Friends and Sex and The City can fuck the fuck right fucking off, wanky, spacktarded drivel that they are.

EDIT: Also, Glee.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:16, Reply)
Oh my "boss" was saying how there was a series he wanted to watch
about a chemist who ends up having to make crack to support his family... something bad... I think.. I want to see that
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:20, Reply)
Breaking Bad
Haven't seen it yet, but it's on my to-buy list

Edit: HMV tells me it's £11 for the first season which is 7 episodes.

ooh thanks personal shopper!

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:36, Reply)
you're welcome
when I get my new card I'm going to buy it
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:38, Reply)
Best series?
House of Cards
To Play the King
Final Cut

Or, more lightheaertedly, take your pick from

Auf Wiedersehen Pet
Minder
The Professionals

Alt: Anything with Nick Berry in it.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:21, Reply)
The Professionals was great
as was The Man from U.N.C.L.E
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:23, Reply)
It always annoyed me I could never remeber what U.N.C.L.E stood for
(I have googled it so don't bother United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.)
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:31, Reply)
My uncle stood for the rights of the workers
and a free and democratic workplace decision making process. Because he was a shop steward.

/may be a lie.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:38, Reply)
It's basically 'The John Lewis Story'

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:44, Reply)
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet still holds up well today, imo.
I got the box set last Christmas and it's still bloody funny.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:27, Reply)
I've got them all too.
The newer ones didn't work as well as the two original series, but they are still watchable.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:28, Reply)
Indeed.
I never did see the final hurrah, though, the one without Bomber in it.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:30, Reply)
Apart from the obvious choice for me...
The most enjoyable series of late was Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:28, Reply)
I gave that to my mother
it's her new favourite programme- she watched the whole of Life on Mars over Christmas
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:29, Reply)
It's one of the few series I can watch over and over and not get tired of it.
Plus Gene Hunt is one of the best characters of the last 20 years.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:33, Reply)
is Ashes to Ashes worth the watch?

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:39, Reply)
Yeah, it's good.
The first series is a bit hit or miss in places, probably because it was following on from Mars and Keeley Hawes' character doesn't quite work. The second series is much, much better, and the third quite dark but ties all the loose ends up really well.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:40, Reply)
£34.99!
I think I'll wait a bit for that
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:42, Reply)
Is that the 3rd series?
You should be able to get it for around £13 in Asda, or from Play.com - I ordered my copy last week.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:44, Reply)
Cheers- £9 from play.com

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:48, Reply)
Bollocks, it's gone down since last week.
:(

Best:
Shogun, Monkey!, The World At War, all Terry Jones' history series, A Bit of Fry & Laurie, The Front Line (Jeff, remember that?), Supergran, Love Thy Neighbour.

Worst: everything else. Load of old fucking shit.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:28, Reply)
Supergran was shit.
Monkey, on the other hand... we got a burned copy of the whole series just before Christmas. Unfortunately our DVD player is playing up a bit at the moment so haven't been able to watch it as the disks keep sticking. I must rectify this when I get my redundancy.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:32, Reply)
That the one with the guy with the stick?

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:34, Reply)
Erm, yes, sort of.

Woooo!
I'm going to hold you to that.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 18:02, Reply)
It's a mythologised telling
of how Buddhism got from India to China - and also a kind of Eastern Pilgrim's Progress. The things that the characters learn on their journey are more important than the mission itself (to bring sacred scrolls to China). At the end of the book (it's a C15th novel by Cheng'en Wu) they open the scrolls and find they are blank.

WOOO. BUDDHIST OR WHAT, DUDE?
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:41, Reply)
Don't bother with episodes after about no.20
They changed the Pigsy actor to a much shitter fellow - you could tell their hearts weren't in it by then. Best episode is the first one.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:38, Reply)
It just brings back warm memories of Friday nights on BBC2.

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:39, Reply)
...and the crushing disappointment
when you realised it was Tales of The Water Margin and not Monkey that was on.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:42, Reply)
I never fell into that trap
because I could read and would consult the TV listings in a bid to avoid being terribly upset that Monkey wasn't on.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:43, Reply)
But you would have got to watch Crackerjack
And there was still one of

The Sweeney
The Gentle Touch
CATS Eyes

or Dempsey and Makepeace to look forward to.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:44, Reply)
Man I love The Sweeney,
A mate of mine got hold of the incidental music on vinyl, the record is called 'Gotcha!' and is sho'nuff fonky.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:45, Reply)
The closing theme to The Sweeney is one of the most depressing bits of music ever.

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:47, Reply)
That mournful oboe.
More distressing than than the closing theme to The Incredible Hulk, even.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:48, Reply)
You can add the closing theme to
Prisoner Cell Block H to the list as well.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:51, Reply)
The Prisoner was good

(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:52, Reply)
you are right about this
I was quite obsessed by it when I was about 16
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:59, Reply)
It was fucking brilliant.
As were The Persuaders and The Saint.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 18:05, Reply)
Nothing is more distressing than 'The Lonely Man' (as the closing theme to the Hulk was called).
Apart from James Blunt shoehorning it into the introductory bars of his seminal pop hit 'You're Beautiful'.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:52, Reply)
One of my father's finest hours

Oooh. I could rip a tissue.
You're right though. The bloke was (and probably remains) a cock.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:52, Reply)
The Front Line?
Was that the one with the Eddie Grant theme tune?
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:33, Reply)
Actually it was by Black Roots.
I know this because I have spent 20 years trying to get hold of a video or DVD of that series, and all I've got is the theme tune on vinyl SO FAR.
(, Tue 11 Jan 2011, 17:39, Reply)
Love Thy Neighbour was great too.
Remember 'Mind your langugage?'

So, the fame of BMX Beat proved to be the downfall of Craig? How very very sad.

Hm.
I'm loving Big Bang Theory at the moment.

I absolutely hate and detest soaps but there is a special bucket o'bile for Eastenders.

I think the only show i've ever followed with more than half hearted enthusiasm
Was Buffy. Oh and Being Human, which I enjoy but isn't brain-bendingly amazing. Sherlock was pretty good but I missed the last episode. Alt - I will never, ever understand anyone who avidly watches any of the soaps. I hate them and they are shit without exception. Friends can fuck off and all.
