If not, please fix me up with a meeting so I can embrarrassingly go on (and on) about Hendrix and not mention The Animals once?

Is that it's a very old song, which lots of people have recorded. Bob Dylan had a version out at one point, the arrangement of which came from a guy he knew called Dave van Ronk. Dylan asked Ronk if he could record the song and release it, to which Ronk replied that he wanted to release it himself. "Too late" replied Dylan. "I already have". Ronk had to stop singing it because people were accusing him of copying Dylan's version. Ronk had the last laugh though - when the animals released their version, Dylan had to stop singing it as he was accused of copying them.

Listen to this song. If you don't like it, it's probably safe to say you're not going to like most of his stuff.
Edit: Mostly he's famous as a songwriter - if you don't like the way he sings, there are hundreds of cover versions out there. For instance, it was him who wrote "All along the watchtower", although he admitted Hendrix's version of it was better than his.

A few years ago they had 'Dylan Night' on BBC2 so I thought I should give him a second chance in case I'd been wrong all these years - nope. 20 minutes of his whiny shitty singing and 'asthmatic on life support' harmonica 'playing' and off it went. Fucking appalling. The Byrds did some decent covers of his stuff as of course did the Almighty Jimi, but as a performer I can honestly say I'd rather watch paint dry.

I think the reason he was successful there was that he was a folk singer, and when he was starting out there were very proscribed ways to sing folk songs. It wasn't so much that he was a fantastic performer, it was that he was different.

He was popular because his whiny 'protest' shit struck a chord with the early-mid 60s US college crowd who turned their noses up at electric blues or rock'n'roll performers because they weren't 'authentic'. He was seen as a God for similar reasons by the middle class CND badge-wearing proto-vegetarian student wanker crowd over here. Anyone who thinks Joan pissing Baez is anything other than a tedious, proselytising cunt-face should be beaten in the eyes with a claw hammer.
