Surely the principle difference between old-skool and current hip-hop
Is not to be found in the lyrical content, but in the quality of the fucking music. Dre can bang on about how awesome he is all he likes; 50 Cent can fuck right off
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:36, 3 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
the difference is
the old skool rappers were awesome. Modern ones are wankers.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:39, Reply)
The modern rappers are too obsessed with money.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:41, Reply)
They always were. They just actually have some now.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:41, Reply)
I've just remembered that Dr Dre's new track is a massive disappointment
But The Chronic and 2001 are awesome records, so my statement stands. And eys, modern ones are wankers. Take one muscular black man, sit him on the hood of a flash car with a woman in a bikini, make him talk quickly about how much money he has, presto. The video for Flo Rida's "Low" is a horrifically stereotypical case in point.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:42, Reply)
You are mixing up 'chart rap' with hip hop here.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:46, Reply)
Fair play
Don't tell me you're not a fan of Dre though
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:48, Reply)
He was OK in the World Class Wreckin Crew
but I think NWA are overrated and his solo stuff does nothing for me. Premier is a 50 x better producer AND he didn't used to wear makeup OR do a MASSIVE u-turn over his stance on weed to be 'down with da kidz' like Dre.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:50, Reply)
I quite like a lot of modern hip hop.
But oh lordy I can't stand Flo Rider or Sean Paul or Pitbull.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:58, Reply)
Not all of them by a long chalk.
The problem is that now folk are either 'underground' which means more earnest, thoughtful and intelligent lyrics but not terribly catchy and rubbish to dance to, OR a dancey beat and monosyllabic gibberish over the top.

The last 'big' record that was a combination of the two that I know of, was 'Oo-wee' by Mark Ronson, bizarrely.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:44, Reply)
I'm still undecided on Ronson
but the man has connections. Getting Ghostface Killah to rap over that tune was genius
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:51, Reply)
It was a superb record.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:56, Reply)
Yes and no.
Yes the music is frequently hideous now, but I also believe the fact that in the 70s/early 80s, the bragging was essentially just bullshitting (no-one had anything at all and the South Bronx looked like Hiroshima) means there's an innocence to it all that I love (I am aware how fucking patronising this sounds). Hearing some helmet crap on about having a dozen cars when it's a reality is just plain vulgar.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:41, Reply)
Where do you stand on the Wu-Tang?
First two albums only, anything from The W onwards can piss off
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:44, Reply)
1st 'full crew' album, and 1st albums by Raekwon, Gza, Meth and ODB all superb.
The rest, directionless and dull.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:45, Reply)
ODB's first album was fucking hilarious
Didn't get he get ejected for taking the piss as a result? Agreed, Tical is an awesome album. I really enjoyed Wu-Tang Forever as well.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:49, Reply)
His show in Ilford was the funniest thing I've ever seen.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:55, Reply)
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is teetotal and 10 is "Monty Boyce",
how wasted was he?
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:58, Reply)
13. His trousers fell down and he sat on the drum riser downing champagne in his pants.
He then tried to get 'all the ladies' back to his hotel.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:01, Reply)
You don't get rappers like that any more
Not least since he carked it a few years back
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:06, Reply)
truth

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:48, Reply)
There is plenty of excellent current hip hop.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:42, Reply)
Edan is my favourite. I LOVE Edan.

Insert 'he's cheesy' gag here.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:44, Reply)
No there isn't

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:45, Reply)
You are also mixing up 'chart rap' with hip hop here.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:47, Reply)
No i'm not
"hip hop" is a shit genre. Full Stop. IT'S ALL JUST FUCKING SHIT.

OMG! Monty in "receiving a taste of his own medicine shocker!"
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:51, Reply)
yes there is
Roots Manuva, Skinnyman, Foreign Beggars, 57th Dynasty and RJD2.

And plenty more recent than those as well.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:50, Reply)
I can't abide roots manuva
because of witness the fitness. I hate that tune
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:51, Reply)
The bassline is excellent.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:55, Reply)
I forgot about Aesop Rock as well.
He is tremendous.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:59, Reply)
I find him a little too earnest and worthy.
Mr Lif, however, is outstanding.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:00, Reply)
agreed.
The recent Mos Def record is pretty good as well.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:02, Reply)
His 'Universal Magnetic' and 'Bodyrock' feat Tash and Q-Tip are amongst the best
post 'golden age' hip hop records in my collection.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:05, Reply)
Black on Both Sides
Was a marvellous album. Premier's production on Mathematics is superb.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:08, Reply)
All of the above are shit.
They are all just fucking shit.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:51, Reply)
Not like that 'Yngwie Malmsteen', who is no way a complete shitty bender, right?

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 9:56, Reply)
Plan B, Dan Le Sac, Dizzy Rascle.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:02, Reply)
Utter, utter shit, never heard him, but assume he's certainly shit, and just shit.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:09, Reply)
How can someone who rhymed
"I stab you in the eye yo', with a fucking biro, the same biro, you used sign your gyro, you fucking wino, best step back or you'll get blood on your nikes bro' "

be shit?
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:19, Reply)
Hahaha that's quality.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:23, Reply)
None of them has bad Germanic poodle perms so Al won't be interested in them.
None wears tights either. You're wasting your time.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:10, Reply)
Oh man, you totally zinged me there
by pointing out that one technically gifted guitarist is a massive cunt who once fell into a swimming pool while carrying out a telephone interview.

Totally undermines my point about all the above artists being shit and talentless.

Totally.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:16, Reply)
I suspect that a lot of the most technically gifted guitarists are massive cunts
not sure why, but it just strikes me that Steve Vai is probably a wanker
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:17, Reply)
I get the impression that Joe Satriani
has become less of a pretentious twat as time has gone on.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:19, Reply)
This is right.
I've read interviews with him from the last year or two and he seems remarkably sound.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:21, Reply)
he's certainly producing some less wanky music
some of the Chickenfoot stuff isn't too bad
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:22, Reply)
That's the thing about guitarists
they need to realise that they ought to be part of a bands structure, not the entire focus of the band.

You would do well to take note.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:23, Reply)
I am so not the focus of my band
you are right though.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:24, Reply)
The focus of your band is its shit name.
Deal with it, please.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:26, Reply)
I've tried
it's not happening.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:28, Reply)
I shall compose a short essay on why they should, if you like.
It may contain expletives, though.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:29, Reply)
I'm tempted to ask you to do this for my entertainment anyway
I don't think it would work with the band though. They don't quite understand.

arguments were like
"we've got a following" - yeah, but it's only our friends and some people we know from the pub
"we've got two cds out" - they're not 'out', and they are frankly a bit shit

still didn't work. The trouble is, most of the band aren't horrible music snobs like you and I
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:32, Reply)
You poor sod.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:44, Reply)
I know...

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:47, Reply)
The same applies to singers who often think of the band as their backing band.
Don't they, AXL ROSE?
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:25, Reply)
Very true

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:30, Reply)
axl would totally have got it in the 80s though
well, if i hadn't been about 8.

not now though. his scary plastic face scares me.
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:35, Reply)
You need to use your illusion.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:36, Reply)
Ritchie Blackmore certainly has a reputation for being "difficult."

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:20, Reply)
"A little touchy"
might be the best way to describe him
(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:22, Reply)
'Medieval gaylord' might be slightly better.

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:24, Reply)
he's a nutter

(, Thu 28 Apr 2011, 10:23, Reply)
