What do people usually do on July 4th?
Are there parades?
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:31, 2 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
It's when they have fireworks I believe

I mean fireworks in summer? You wouldn't be able to see them.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:43, Reply)

That's what I heard, anyway.

*bigs it up*

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:58, Reply)
Where I live there is a parade, but it's never on the 4th, and it's called the Fireman's Parade, but it's meant to go along with the celebrations of the 4th
there's usually cookouts and drinking, then very large and loud fireworks at night
people set off their own usually but you can go to see the huge ones or you can usually see them from anywhere in town
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:40, Reply)
Do you get to slide down a fireman's pole?

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:41, Reply)
Or polish his helmet?

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:42, Reply)
She'd rather a good soaking from a massive hose.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:42, Reply)
I reckon she'd be happy with a light sprinkle
from something the size of a drinking straw.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:56, Reply)
Oh man, that means merkins must be really nice
because all the ones I met in San Francisco were nice. Expect one guy who was a cock.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:55, Reply)
I like San Francisco.
Lovely city. Apart from the earthquake risk.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:56, Reply)
I just can't understand why God wants to take California away from us when there's so many other places he could take
like Florida...Canada...and Alaska
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:57, Reply)
Who are we to question the Lord's work Kristine.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:58, Reply)
The people who made him up in the first place?

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:59, Reply)
I reckon it's because San Francisco is full of homosexualists.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:00, Reply)
I never thought of it like that.
But Sarah Palin is in Alaska, surely that's worse.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:04, Reply)
Not in God's eyes, it would seem.

My cousin emigrated from Switzerland to Canada a few years ago.
She lives near Manchester now.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 13:55, Reply)
Glad she got her head on straight.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:05, Reply)
I don't know why she wanted to leave Switzerland, to be honest.
The town she lived in was lovely.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:07, Reply)
Maybe she wasn't happy.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:09, Reply)
Probably got tired of everything being well organised and clean.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:10, Reply)
I couldn't stand that.
Imagine having a perfectly run country? Christ, what would you complain about, eh?
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:11, Reply)
probably, right.
because although it's superficially lovely, Switzerland is a fucking odd place to live. Like, since it's more or less impossible to get citizenship it's really hard to buy property. Oh, and you can work there all your life and be deported on zero notice (no citizenship again) and they have really odd and strict laws about noise, litter etc which again may seem superficially good but are actually a bitch to live with ... and also the trains might run like clockwork but they never show all their destanations, which is really fucking frustrating.

Oh, and it's got as a bad a rate of firearms related deaths per capita as some of the more "robust" areas of the US. Minor point.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:14, Reply)
I'm going to refute that
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

I know it's wikipedia, but the numbers there show that the death rate is nearly half that of the US, and most of it is suicides, not homicides.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:16, Reply)
statistically miles out of date. I believe it's much higher these days but of course I can't prove it
But, yeah, I'm probably slightly exaggerating. It's still brutally high for a developed mainland european country with "supposedly" civilised society. Like, it's 15 times higher than England.

Also, I'm not entirely sure about this (I'll grant you it does sound very odd) but a close friend who has lived in Geneva for about 15 years told me that it's classified as suicide if it's your own gun, hence the very odd stats. I'll admit that sounds like bollocks, but remember the Swiss are VERY odd.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:19, Reply)
Look badger, you can't be right about everything all the time
why don't you be the bigger man and just admit you're wrong about this.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:21, Reply)
I said I was exaggerating. Consider that one up for team Al.
Although, I'm genuinely interested if there is any truth in my edit.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:23, Reply)
Are you saying that shooting someone else with your own gun counts as suicide?
Or are you saying it's ONLY suicide if it's your own gun?
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:27, Reply)
no, he said it was to do with whether or not you were shot with your own gun.
Like I said, sounds like bollocks but you can never tell with the Swiss
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:33, Reply)
I found out the other week
that my cousin used to hang about with a founder member of Swiss industrialist rockers the Young Gods. I was quite impressed by this.

I knew there were some strange things about the place, but hadn't realised the level of restrictions there. So you may have a point.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:18, Reply)
You cant' flush your toilet after a certain time of night in some apartment blocks.
But on the plus side, nobody has any problems with changing large bank notes if that's all you have.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:19, Reply)
I have a vague recollection of this when I was staying with my Aunt.

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:20, Reply)
Is there anyone who is into "[country] [made up sub-type of music that means NOTHING AT ALL] [music Ganra]" who doesn't claim to know every single band personally?

(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:27, Reply)
I don't.
But my cousin does.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:29, Reply)
I like that Swiss emo band
My Chemical Romansch.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:31, Reply)
I like that violent god bothering rock band
'Guns n Moses'
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:32, Reply)
And the goth band with a very short reach
Flids of the Nephilim.
(, Tue 5 Jul 2011, 14:34, Reply)
