I am awesome. That is all.
ok then, what's the last song you learned to play on an instrument? Mine was Always: Your Way by My Vitriol or possibly Fire by Kasabian

If you have no errors associated with your monitor then it's probably a hardware issue of some kind. See if it's still under warranty and return it to the place of purchase.

on the flute. But I suppose that's a pretentious answer, so I'll also offer tunes from Zelda on the ocarina

Koji Kondo FTW. You were on 6Music? Me too, I was on Steve Lamacq's Good Day / Bad Day thing a few weeks back.

I therefore chose bad day and they played Fell On Black Days by Soungarden.

I'd have remembered that, so no I didn't hear that one :(

from america in the 90s. Why do you have it? It is brilliant though, listen to it again.

but you already had it, so I kept it.

I've seen them a couple of times in the last few years and they were outstanding. I was a bit star struck seeing Jerry Cantrell.

I think it was you who said I should see Iron and Wine at Greenman. I nearly didn't as I had to drive home, but then I decided to stay as you had declared I would be a fool to miss him and they he was BRILLIANT. Thank you :)

Although it sounds nothing like it as my strings are so old they won't hold tune anymore and I'm too lazy to go buy more.

I was having a good old fashioned rock out with my guitar the other day.

but the last song I learned all the lyrics to was Waka Waka by Shakira.

my friend showed me how to make a reed from a straw the other day, so I added a few holes to get different notes and I expect while 3 of us played these it sounded like angels trumpets to all who could hear

but not well. And there really isn't that much call for it in life...

recorders can be lovely - I remember seeing a concert with a woman who played different recorders (I don't remember details, I was about 10) and it blew my young mind. I think my friend's dad was a professional recorder player of some note, too.

but it always sounds like a recorder when it gets to the high bits.
Even Greensleeves would be good, tbh. I can do the star spangled banner and the can can, and do re mi. Oh, and Annie's Song. Mostly all self-taught by ear, so probably way off...
(, Sat 24 Sep 2011, 18:22, Reply)
I could play Greensleeves when I was in junior school! Try musicroom.com, they have loads of sheet music available for download for £1-£2.
(, Sat 24 Sep 2011, 18:27, Reply)
although I can't yet play it to tempo. I got a rock legends sheet music book out of the library today though, so I shall probably be blasting out some Van Halen/Boston/Journey later on.

entirely self taught. Which is probably why I can only play songs I know as I can't keep time in my head, ergo don't sight read well, and know nothing about musical theory or chord progressions or any of that stuff, and so can't write music either.
(, Sat 24 Sep 2011, 18:26, Reply)
I got as far as the first bit of Bohemian Rhapsody and Melon Collie (that smashing pumpkins one). I struggle with timing, too - I'm far too aware that I spend a lot of the time just listening to the other flute 2s and copying that instead of properly working out the notes
(, Sat 24 Sep 2011, 18:29, Reply)
which isn't bad considering I've done it entirely myself, but it has less to do with being musical than it does with being bright. After all, piano is pretty easy - you learn how to read music and away you go. It's not like you have to be coached for months and years on how to produce tone or effects or anything, you just hit the keys.

Considering I sing all the time at home, I expect mr b3th would like me to learn, too.
I have a feeling that not being able to breathe through my nose might hamper my progress somewhat.

we can pick stuff up as we go along. I want to be able to play stuff like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW8TgwGLBpY
I can't

he's ace. Although I like this too - it sounds familiar for some reason.

Laura Martin I saw at Green Man, she loops the music as sje plays it, which was pretty impressive. In a way it's a bit gimicky, with the split octaves and double and triple tonguing (ie fancy show off techniques) but it's a fun tune.

tennis boy sings beautifully and can't understand why I point blank refuse to sing or play any of my numerous musical instruments in front of him. I'm perfectly happy to sing or play, but not around other people who do it a bajillion times better than I do.
(, Sat 24 Sep 2011, 18:47, Reply)
... I mean, until you know how to play them right, so you can hit the right note at the right time. I can see why you wouldn't want to do that infront of someone like him until you're confident at doing it. But I'm sure you would be a pleasure to watch and listen too while tooting the trumbone or twanging away the strings until you come to a grand crushendo.

as in, where it all goes on the stave and whatnot - I just can't make up a tune. I don't think my brain is wired that way, I sit in front of the piano and think 'well, I know lots of chords, let's put some together in a new and interesting way' and my brain just sits there scratching it's arse with a fag in it's hand going 'Wha'? I dunno.'

I just want to travel there after work to see what the comute is like, but it ticks so many boxes, it's a minuite away from Waitrose too. The only stipulation is that the people who currently live there doesn't currently have any where forward to move onto and we want them out ASAP so we can get the decorators in; I think I'll be getting a new kitchen when I do.
