Tuneage and that. Jeff is in the pub so I can quite happily accuse him of quendophilia.
Now- a slight theme for maybe the first few tracks- bands that others may be surprised that you like.
First up-
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd3C9aAupQI
Manic Street Preachers. From The Holy Bible. An astounding album, nobody thought they had it in them to deliver on their promise and convert pretension to perfection.
It's a horrible album- jagged, acidic and hateful, but shot through with such dark humanity and humour that it truly becomes, as one critic once said, 'a triumph of art over logic'. This is the opening track, and has a very sweary word in the first line.

Steadily decreasing returns since 1994. Everything Must Go was the start of the nosedive to mediocrity.

I don't know how James Dean Bradfield managed it.
Also, he was remarkably good looking at that time, then his looks faded with their skills.
I also love Joy Division.

Shitpop more like. At that time, the best stuff was coming out of Scotland. Mogwai, Aerogramme, Arab Strap, Slam, that whole Chemikal Underground scene...
As I remember Mogwai saying about Blur and their fans- cunts in tight Adidas t shirts.
The Dozist concurs.

ditto Air, Sigur Ros, Nightmares on Wax etc.
But I also like Britpop.

I'm impressed Bobby.

Warp hit their peak around 2002 though. But Aphex, Squarepusher, Plone, Plaid, BoC, Two Lone Swordsmen, Red Snapper, Autechre, NoW, Sabres of Paradise...only Mo Wax come close.

I remember when Come On Die Young came out. I remember loving it deeply and being astounded by the mixed reaction to it.
I still stand by my view that it is Mogwai at their finest- it took what they were doing with single tracks and translated it to the album context. Breathtaking maturity for a bunch of 21 year old metalheads.
That whole section from May Nothing But Happiness...through to Xmas Steps. Unbeatable.

England 2, Montenegro 2. And to think that we fought WWII. The second most racistly named country in the world (after Niger, obviously) and England can't even show them what for? What really sticks in my craw though, is that they have seen fit to create this comedy 'Monty' character to try and make the racism seem more cuddly.
