At a macro level it looks ridiculous to be sending aid to countries like India
however the fact is that at a personal level people still live in tragic circumstances. It is the indian govenement's responsibilty to change this, however as a country with a concscience it's hard to stand buy and watch peope suffer while this change occurs.

the short answer is that family planning and womens eductaion is the best way to drive the development of countries
that's where the focus should be. However that's a long term goal and it's hard to see starving children now and say we won't help.

I don't see how helping people can be a bad thing.
I guess we can afford it because we always budget for it, but my understanding of economics on this scale is severely limited.
As to whether we can afford not to, I don't know what the quantifiable benefits are, but I'm sure it is good for increasing our positive vibes.

We, as a country, don't have a vote in their country. Even some of their own people don't have a vote in their own country. They even have a space program, which I believe is bigger than our own. It's the equivilent to giving your mate money for food when they've got a bigger telly than you.
