New thread time...

I'm trying to sort out a loft conversion and am awaiting quotes. What's the going rate? Any problems to look for? Advice please...

Alt: Movie sequels - are there any worthwhile ones? or are they all shameless attempts to cash in on a successful theme?

Altalt: last meal before you are executed?

Can't you just do it yourself?
Smack some wood into stuff, that sort of thing.
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:28, Reply)
Dear God no!...

The phrase 'useless twat at DIY' doesn't quite cut it when it comes to me.
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:30, Reply)
hello Mr twisty cheeky,
Depends what you're converting it in to. I mean, a scale model of Tracey island will be more expensive than say, a bum.

Mad max 2,the batman one and loads more. This is a silly question.

Christ, are you going for "most generic ot thread ever"? Bad advice, films and food. I'm disappointed.
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:30, Reply)
Sorry - new to starting new threads...

Just a standard loft conversion into a bedroom with an ensuite. Standard 3 bed semi size in the midlands

and I totes get you on Mad Max and Batman (entire reboot in fact).
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:33, Reply)
en suite?
Fancy. I have no idea how much that would cost. Just get loads of quotes, get an idea of a middle price, find a builder you can visit previous work of, get a quote from him, haggle him down to about a grand below what you want to pay to give you wriggle room if there is a disaster, or your wife decides she does want the gold taps and expensive tiles after all. Done. Don't pay up front, don't let his "brother in law" fill in when he gets another big job on, and get a contract preferably signed in blood.
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:43, Reply)
Top stuff - thank you...

I'm leaning towards one who has given his word that he doesn't flit between jobs - and then said that because of that he wouldn't be able to start until May. Is that naive of me?
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:47, Reply)
I had loads of problems when I bought my house with a builder moving between jobs,
It is best to wait, and if he is honest, he should have no problem putting you in touch with some of his previous clients
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:49, Reply)
Agreed...

Our conservatory was one of those jobs. Took months :(

The builder also gave us a few addresses of his previous jobs to check out, but he unknowingly has the fortunate resemblence of the wife's not-long-dead granddad - So she's sold on him already
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 13:02, Reply)

the ones we used were very hard working, quiet and finished ahead of schedule.almost as good as Polish.

Stay away from local building control and hire your own, JHAI Etc.

Never use central pivot roof lights in a habitable room always use top hung

some sequels actually make the originals better
I can only think of one that does this, Godfather Part 2. And I am posting from my phone so not going to expand any further on this.

Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film though, I'll give you that. I prefer Alien to Aliens though.

You prefer Prometheus

(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 13:00, Reply)
nah, I thought Prometheus was silly.
The space-Jesus thing was risible, and it was nowhere near as good as Ridley Scott was making out. I would like to see the sequel though, and Fassbender was excellent.

I really liked Prometheus, but then I was never much of a Aliens fanboi

When I was watching it, I enjoyed it, but afterwards, the more I thought about it, the more it didn't make any sense and was actually shit.

really ought to get round to it, considering i was happy to sit and watch Cliffhanger last night.
(, Tue 26 Feb 2013, 12:53, Reply)
I've not even started any of them
Cliffhanger was the first time I saw John Lithgow play a bad guy, which was odd. I've been informed he's rather good in Dexter though.

His unexpected use of teh word "cunt" is good.
