yeah I've got saucepans and frying pans and something that's probably technically a wok for the hob
and a pyrex casserole dish for the oven. But cassoulet seems to call for something I can start on the hob and then move to the oven.

self-taught cook
lived for years and years on takeaway and ready meals. I quite enjoy cooking now I've started. I made a roux the other day to thicken a stew, it was brilliant.

You'd never made a roux before? How have you made white sauces in the past?

(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:27, Reply)
By a vigorous up and down movement with his arm, while staring at his neighbours

(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:29, Reply)
Why would I make a white sauce?
Proper food is brown. It were good enough for me mam and her mam before her.

Haha, fucking hell, how many meals do you have to cook in that thing for it to be worth the dosh?

Le Creuset stuff lasts forever, really good quality.

(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:15, Reply)
Yeah', totally, plus they make good wedding pressents.....but it's still $190 to spend on yourself just so you can use the hob and oven using the same dish.

I have a few pans that were handed down to me from my mum
still perfect.
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:20, Reply)
yeah I searched Amazon UK for cassoulet dish and found 1 entry
that gets iffy reviews.

This seems more like it: www.amazon.co.uk/Jamie-Oliver-Tefal-Anodised-Roast/dp/B004P3UIZU/

Essentially any cast iron pan will do the trick
make sure it doesn't have plastic handles.

Sainsburys were having a sale on Le Creuset style stuff a few weeks ago
Might still be on
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:19, Reply)
TK Maxx often have it for sale.

(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:21, Reply)
Hmm, cast iron then

Decent reviews. At least I know what I'm looking for now, thanks internet!
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:22, Reply)
That should be fine.

(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:25, Reply)
I should clarify that I have done that fucking numbnuts move of
thinking the iron pan would be fine in the over and forgetting that it was a cheaper one with plastic handles.
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:25, Reply)
Yeah, found one that got great reviews but alluded vaguely to a max temp for the oven
finally found a comment that mentioned 140C, seems a bit low for most recipes.
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:29, Reply)
Yeah its easier to just avoid them,
However you will now make the other stupid move of forgetting when its on the hob that the handles are now very hot and you will burn yourself at least once
(, Fri 14 Feb 2014, 12:31, Reply)
once seems optimistic for me
