1st!
I've only worked half a day!

No sign BK?

Put a sign up or no one will see you.
Besides, it's not very welcoming, is it *grumble*

Mrs Liveinabin
Howdy! I had my interview. When I drove back home, I got a phone call saying they liked me and wanted me back for a second interview. I'm downplaying it at work because a) I don't want to jinx it and b) I want to tell my bosses as close to the date as possible so they're forced to give me time off and I don't have to use my holiday up!
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:15, Reply)
Mike
You need to make that sign. Go on!

Mrs Bin - no, I'm fine! Just like grumbling about things :)
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:16, Reply)
Sounds hopeful
then Stig.

Did you like the look of it?
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:16, Reply)
Hello
I've managed to book a day off tomorrow as I'd got two interviews booked. However, upon further inspection, it appears that one had been booked for Wednesday the 1st October... A mere hour after the confirmation email was sent to me!

And I thought I was being so clever.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:19, Reply)
Mrs Liveinabin
It all looks good. The job is based in London, but I'd have to spend some time in Dorset.

All's well so far.

How did teaching go?
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:20, Reply)
Evening all
I've just been told to take 3 weeks off sick. Not sure whether I'm pleased about that or not.

We'll see I guess.

@The Stig

Glad your interview went well. The idea of being paid to go to Dorset sounds quite nice.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:22, Reply)
@captain V
Thanks, but why do you have to take 3 weeks of work?
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:24, Reply)
Hmm
Can't get the sign to work, and it's running way to slow to fuck about with.

is it
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:26, Reply)
On Doctor's say so
I think he's concerned that, even though I'm responding well to the medication, going back to work might stress me out and cause a relapse (into another manic episode).

On the bright side I've been given a proper diagnosis now and hopefully when I see the doctor again in about a fortnight we'll start discussing long term treatment more seriously.

I'm now concerned that I'm beginning to sound like a broken record round here so I shall refrain from talking about this further. For the record I've been diagnosed as bipolar.

10 points to anybody who can find the image of a very sad looking polar bear waving a flag that says either woo or yay.

*twiddles thumbs*
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:32, Reply)
Captain V
Sorry to hear that. I would like to hear more of that story, but I understand if you don't want to talk about it.

When it comes to health, you can't be too careful.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:33, Reply)
@The Stig
I'm pretty easy really. I don't mind talking about my diagnosis either.

I'm just concious of the fact that all I seem to have spoken about in OT lately is me and the quacks and I'd rather not bore anybody to death.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:35, Reply)
captain V
No harm in talking about it. No sense to bottle it up. I bore everyone to death about cars!
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:38, Reply)
You're right about bottling stuff up
At the moment though there's little to say other than things are heading in the right direction *cheers*
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:45, Reply)
How did it all come about?
And how did your bosses react to your 3 weeks off?
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:47, Reply)
Evening all
I'll be popping in every so often this evening.

Bummer about your 3 weeks off, Captain V. Although I quite fancy the idea (of three weeks off work, that is, not the reasons for it!)
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:49, Reply)
@ Cap'n V
Take the three weeks. Trust me on this- it's a Very Good Idea. Having just spent the past couple of years living with someone with that particular curse, I can speak with authority- three weeks while switching meds is actually not very long. It took them ages to get hers right, and during that time she was totally out of control.

So take your time and do it right, and remember that bipolar disorder is an actual problem like arthritis or migraines and that it's just as important to treat this as it would be to treat a bad hip. Saying that mental disorders are not serious business is horseshit. They are. Take care of it NOW, before it messes your life up worse.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:58, Reply)
At least you have
a diagnosis Captain V
That way you can contact support groups and the like.

Some of this counties best people are bipolar, and Robbie Williams (don't let that put you off though)
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 18:59, Reply)
To echo Mrs Bin's post
As is dear Stephen Fry .... Good that you've got a diagnosis. I imagine not knowing to be the hardest thing - Once you know your enemy I think a lot of the stress dissipates.
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 19:02, Reply)
Thanks for the support guys
I'm definitely going to take the time to sort things out properly.

I'm on a low dose of olanzapine which, thankfully, stopped my manic episode dead in it's tracks.

As I mentioned earlier I hope that when I next see the doctor (about a fortnight) we'll discuss switching to lithium as a long term treatment.

As far as my bosses are concerned - I'll tell them tomorrow morning. Didn't leave the hospital until 17:20 today so they'd not have been in the office.

I'll be taking the sort of stance the loon does, as I always have. Besides, I'm protected by disability discrimination.

Not sure I'd be able to apply for a parking badge though =[

You're not alone, mate! Your friends are here to support you. :O)

No problem BK

Cap'n V
One of the best things I've found about b3ta is how understanding and patient people are.
I've been moaning like fuck for months about my lack of a job (see? there I go again!) and people are still nice.
Don't ever think people won't want to listen.
B3tans are ace personified.

Edit - And if it's things to do whilst others are at work - youtube is your friend.
More specifically, Ross Noble on youtube. He never fails to cheer me up!
(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 19:18, Reply)
The difference is, Captain V
that your condition justifies the help you can get from the disability laws, and it's good that you can make the most of them.

Unlike some of the scrounging buggers who claim all sorts of injuries and so on, just so they can draw benefits and not have to work.

In other news, today I saw what appeared to be a highly crispy turd lying in the street outside the lab. I thought it must have been extremely painful to pass, like shitting a porcupine, but closer inspection* revealed it was in fact a discarded chocolate crispy!

This identification was confirmed by a prod of the foot, whereupon its disintegration left the cornflake based internal structure clearly visible.

*Yes, I stopped and bent down to have a better look.

Oh my god I might make some chocolate rice crispy cakes tomorrow.

I'm a scientist, Lucy
It's my job (and indeed in my nature) to find out about stuff!

Even suspect jobbies. I imagine it was an accidental chocolate crispy dropping incident. No one would throw away such goodness voluntarily, surely?

I would have looked closely as well.
But then, I've been known to entertain a group of strangers by poking apart an owl pellet with a stick and trying to identify the creatures by their skulls...

Drinking water helps clear skin conditions up.

Or a complete skin graft...which is cheaper?

Drinking water only helps a little. If the skin problem is inherent then all you get is lots of trips to the loo.

(, Tue 7 Oct 2008, 20:40, Reply)
I knew you would all be intrigued by my back door shenanigans.
I have a wooden farmhouse type door that splits in two. It has never been looked after by previous owner and keeps warping in the wet weather. I haven't been able to seal it as it's always bloody raining.

My dad says fuck it! get a new door. So that is what I am going to do.

Edit - getting any thing new for the house is very exciting.

I am a sad cunt!
End of story.

That's a pity
as I really like that door and wish I had one here- but then, we have far more insects than you do, so it wouldn't be practical. That's why we have screen doors over here.

Dad's right, though- it's probably too far gone at this point.

Not bad timing at all to be honest. Decent flight from Heathrow to Stockholm, then a connection to Arvidsjaur on the tiniest little plane I've been on - a Saab 2000. Plenty of room though - we had about a row of seats each!

Arvidsjaur airport is tiny, so managed to collect my baggage in good time and got a taxi to Arjeplog, which took just over an hour.

Had a bite to eat, checked into my room and switched my laptop on to be back in the b3ta fold.

Despite what it says the weather is like here, it's currently about -4 and there's plenty of ice and snow on the ground. I'll be having a bit of fun with that tomorrow ;)
