Since there isn't already one...

Come in and get toasty!
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:13, 223 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Why isn't there a new QOTW??
*Whines*
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:15, Reply)
Do you provide the toast/
its just that I'm bit peckish, there are no shops near me and I have no change for the sweetie machine
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:17, Reply)
Hehe
I got paid today, so I'm sorted. Even booked my hotel for the Manc bash.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:17, Reply)
See? The new sign is appropriate!
Besides, it is almost Halloween...

Dunno, but I may have to go for a bit and do some work while I wait...
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:17, Reply)
afternoon folks
did someone say toast? Lightly browned please, with a nice spreading of butter ...
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:18, Reply)
I hope it's a good one
I didn't have anything to say for the last QOTW.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:19, Reply)
Me neither, Colonel
I didn't even read half of the pages ...

*crosses fingers*
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:21, Reply)
Yeah I didn't post either
And barely read it.

Hopefully it'll be a good one this time, where is it though?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:31, Reply)
Miasma
they're just tormenting us. The B3ta gods (All Hail!) do this arbitrary thing with one closing then making us wait aaaaaaages for a new QOTW.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:34, Reply)
It makes you realise
That you don't want QOTW where lots of people can respond - partly because it's more than you can read, but also because it results in lots of crap replies!

*fingers crossed for something more specific than lists of things people hate*
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:34, Reply)
Yeah, I'm getting antsy
I have to leave work at 4.30 on Thursdays, so if it doesn't turn up at a reasonable time, I don't tend to get to see if until Friday.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:34, Reply)
It wasn't particularly that loads of people replied
Mainly that the question just invites one line responses, and lists of things. Boring to read compared to the ones that inspire story responses.

I had no problems with any of the prejudice, misanthropy or general hypocrisy, it just wasn't funny enough..
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:36, Reply)
I think
That they're probably too busy picking out and eating their toejam or something.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:38, Reply)
Last weeks did get a lot of crap
But there were some cracking answers in there too, there were just bigger gaps between them.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:39, Reply)
I was surprised
to see that two of my answers got to the Best Of page. I figured that my rant was too long and rambling to be voted up- and I figured that the other one was too inflammatory.

Ah well...
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:40, Reply)
I think
there were just a handful of people that dominated this weeks best of.

(modesty forbids me naming one of them)
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:41, Reply)

you're at your best when you're being inflammatory .... or sarcastic.

So I've been told.
Which apparently makes me a rather abrasive jerk... amusing, but abrasive.

Could be worse- I could be a boring jerk.

Absolutely right.

Much better to be loved by some and hated by others than to be ignored by all.

A man on countdown
has just scored a lot of points with 'erections'
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:51, Reply)
And that is why
my friend Richard calls me a professional asshole- because I'm at my most amusing when I'm being awful. I can say things that would earn most people a mouthful of broken teeth, and make people laugh instead.

I'm still not sure that this is a good thing.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:52, Reply)
@mrs bin
at least he didn't score with that while playing darts.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:52, Reply)
MrsL
you are far, far, too young to be watching Countdown. Step away from the tv. Carefully. That sort of thing is infectious ...
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:52, Reply)
Hello!
All...
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:54, Reply)
but I like Countdown WW
Anyway, I've got a cold and I've failed two job interviews in as many days I'm allowed to sit on the sofa and feel sorry for myself!
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:54, Reply)
Mmmmmmmmm, well okay MrsL
we'll make an exception, just this once. Bummer on the jobs front. Why do we keep hearing that there are a shortage of teachers?

Edit: hello Edmund. How are you?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:55, Reply)
Countdown's amazing!
I have to confess to spending FAR too much time playing the Countdown game on my mobile. Very limited dictionary though, I kept (actually) playing words it didn't know.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:57, Reply)
@ Loon
I tend to get that - I can say the most appalling things and my mates go, "Oh, Beekers, you scamp"

OK, maybe not those exact words. I'm not mates with the Famous Five or anything.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:58, Reply)
@Loon
Well, the end result will be you'll only be friends with people who like you for you who are (and put up with the lash of your tongue), and who you like in return (meaning you don't slag off all the time). Could be worse outcomes...

I'm a bit of an optimist though. YMMV (as I think Yanks say more than Brits).
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:58, Reply)
Woo!
I am posting this from Lakeland in Ambleside! This place is great, free internet, cake, tv to watch in the bog, and I just ate the best meal I've had in months (in a round restaurant) and someone else paid :)

And I bought some totally frivolous things: soap nuts, thingies to stop sheets from slipping up your mattress, and a corn on the cob for putting in the microwave to make popcorn on the cob :)

It is surprisingly hard to type this as most of the letters on the keyboard have been rubbed off.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:59, Reply)
I'm just passing the time
Reading cracked.com. Brilliant site!
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:59, Reply)
My friend
works in a pensions call centre, and they refer to the half hour or whatever the programme's on as "The Countdown Quiet". Apparently their call rate dips quite significantly whenever it's on.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 15:59, Reply)
Oh are we here now?
With the huuuuuuuuuuge picture :p

I don't really care I just thought I'd be awkward.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:00, Reply)
I like to keep up a steady stream of foul mouthed and offensive banter
whilst working (or not working), it keeps me sane and passes the time.

Can be quite funny when people take it the wrong way (i.e. seriously)
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:00, Reply)
I can do that too
It's odd, I can often call people cunts, to their face, and they'll laugh and say "Oh Kaol, you joker!".

All the while the voice in my head is muttering "But you ARE a cunt".
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:00, Reply)
@WFF
Ambleside? You lucky git. (well, apart from your weather today).

I love Ambleside. And the entire lakes. I am up there about once a month.

Me=jealous.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:02, Reply)
Conversely
I try to be nice and people think I'm being horrid.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:02, Reply)
See, that's it.
I can be thoroughly insulting and say things that are extremely accurate and truthful, but say them with a charming smile and a laugh, and people can never tell if I'm just teasing or if I'm truly being harsh. And as it's so close to the truth, it makes people laugh like hell.

Without that smile and laugh, I would get beaten a lot.

EDIT: Oh, and TGB- the file is only about 80K, so if that causes your browser to lag you need a better browser. :-p
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:03, Reply)
I haven't been to Ambleside in years
Lovely up there though.

Last time I was there I got bit by a hedgehog, and broke the leg off the bed in the holiday cottage due to, er, drunken fun.

Lakeland is funny, it's full of solutions in search of a problem. My mum bought a device for peeling garlic (don't know if it's from there, but it's that sort of thing)

It's well weird, sort of a rubber tube about 5" long and 1.5" diameter, with crinkly ends. Quite hard to explain and entirely useless as far as I can figure out. WTF is wrong with a knife?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:06, Reply)
Scarpe
I live a 30-50 minute drive from the Lakes (depending on which part of the Lakes).

The weather is spectacularly bad here today. Which is why I am all cosy at Lakeland while I wait for my mum and step dad to take the elderly relatives back to their hotel.

As someone who rarely leaves their bedroom, I am truly appreciating how marvellous the internet is. You can take it everywhere!

EDIT: haha! Miasma, you're absolutely right. It's as if all the Dragon's Den rejects got together.

I've found
that listening to Louis Prima makes it impossible to be in a bad mood.

I think I need to get more of his stuff.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:20, Reply)
Why is there no new question??
God I might have to go on /talk at this rate. Oh well.

I haven't been to the Lakes in an age, I will have to rectify this next year. But here's an idea- how about a weekend bash up in the Lakes somewhere? Hiking, drinking, that kind of thing. What do you lot think?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:21, Reply)
Can Louis Prima
alleviate the lack of a QOTW?

What's been annoying me is I lost out on post a reply to someone because of the early closure.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 16:22, Reply)
YES
Because I will be able to make it to that one!

And Oh! OOH OOH *ponders*

Hmm.

I think he can.
Try listening to "Jump Jive and Wail" and see if you don't instantly get the urge to dance. Follow that with "Beep! Beep!" and see if you're not grinning.

He's good.

Well...
I'm off. No new QOTW for me until tomorrow.

I've had it for about a week now. Is that bad?

I duno about bad
I don't get them too often but they tend to last about 4 or 5 days
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 17:01, Reply)
I find
that eating something like ketchup that makes the ulcer on my tongue sting like hell makes it heal faster. It's like it cauterizes it or something.

I would imagine salt and vinegar will do the same.

Good Afternoon Deviants and Desperados
(that should cover everybody nicely)

I am about to move into full rockstar lifestyle, and polish my shoes, iron things and otherwise get my shit together for tomorrow's interview.

I would also claim not to be nervous at all, however I have a worrying tic, and a posterior that resembles the Japanese flag.

(Notes - I wasn't too worried until I found out yesterday that a major plc has just started laying off people locally, from the same franchise, so now the competition has just massively expanded. Thanks a bunch. Coincidentally the same plc that did it's best to ensure I'd never be employed in my field again, so I'm not exactly crying about their current woes. Mwahahahahaha)

On the fluffy side, home made leek & potato soup to make, crusty rolls to bake, and an enormous Scotch to help it all down.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 17:04, Reply)
Good luck for tomorrow Osok!
Have you read up on the company and thought of questions to ask them? /obviousness
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 17:05, Reply)
To Be Honest
My interview strategy is based upon

(a) Lies
(b) Outright Begging
(c) Threats
(d) Violence
(e) Concealed Weapons
(f) Crying Pathetically
(g) Threatening Suicide
(h) Incontinence
(i) Arson

That should do the trick.....

(actually I know my stuff, have ten years experience, and they'd be getting me cheap on the grounds that I am skint and desperate)

I've got her phone number now. Yay! That sort of thing never happens to me :-)

Night Clendrix. And TGB, but you're probably long gone.

Heavy Rock?
A bit, yeah!

I've not got a recording, but it's a song about a fugitive from justice.
Who may or may not be an insomniac serial killer.

I don't know where I get my inspiration from...

*grins*

So, what're you up to this fine evening, Mr. O'Death?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 23:49, Reply)
Not much really
Was packing stuff up for heading away for the weekend, and managed to do one bag of clothes and one bag for cables and computers and things. And now I'm lying in bed, eating Fox's fruit glaciers and watching QI. Good stuff.

Upto much yourself? Photoshopping? And where is everyone tonight?
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 23:50, Reply)
Dunno where everyone is *shrugs*
I'm chatting to my mate, he split up with his girlfriend tonight, so he's feeling a bit shite.

No photoshop tonight, was using it all day at work, so my brain's a bit frazzled with it.
Got some projects to do on it this weekend though, a poster for a mate and some artwork for ancrenne.

Exciting stuff!
(, Thu 23 Oct 2008, 23:55, Reply)
A bit rubbish for him indeed
I never find it easy to find someone who has just broken up with someone. I should just ignore them or something instead, y'know?

I'm going to try and use photoshop more after my hand in on Monday. Really should finish that hand in.

Wish I was watching QI though :) I think when I get a job I shall spend my first paycheque on a tv for my bedroom.

Greetings again
Have finally added my bash-pics to the b3ta-bash pool. For some reason, they've come out in the wrong order in the b3ta bash pool, but they're in order in the photo-sets.

BTW: Have added some new ones coz someone changed their mind about being on the pics. Have also added some very minimalistic descriptions. Hopefully, they shouldn't be booted out of the pool this time.

It's nice

And good evening PoD, and Mista as I see you have just arrived, and Kaol, but you knew that already :)

With a tv in my room, and a kettle, I would never have to leave. Laptop, Dave, tea and pot noodles 24/7...

You can get a TV tuner for your laptop and watch TV on the laptop. That way, if someone's talking, you can try and shove the mouse cursor in their gob so it looks like they're eating the mouse cursor.
