Any of you used the service?
I'm thinking on cancelling Sky Movies (as I don't watch any of the films on there) and replacing that subscription with LoveFilm, so I can order DVD's I won't have time to watch either.
Do they have multiple copies of popular films? Is it any good? Do they mysteriously manage to 'lose' titles you return, leaving you liable to a hefty fee?

You don't get the films you want to see the most first but I think it's quite exciting getting an email from them telling me my next film is on the way. So far no problems with them. I would recommend them.

Dont know if they're only in Ireland.
Works for me.

is great. There's only been two films I've wanted to see that they don't have (Tonga Ninja and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes), they have multiple copies, and it's all fast.
You pay a monthly fee, and can have 2 films at a time out. You don't get a fine for keeping one for ages, you just don't get the next film till you return the previous one.
And there's a way of getting some films before others: you can put them on a priority list, so they're more likely to be sent first.
Highly recommended.

Weren't they originally under the Amazon brand?
I was with Amazon and had no complaints. There was one DVD I sent back but they never received it. I emailed them to remind them that I'd returned it as they were still listing it as being in my possession. They replied with "Ok, it probably got lost in the post" and I wasn't charged any extra. Probably on the shelf of some post office worker now.
Apart from that, a great service. Plus, you're not limited to films that are at least 18 months old.

and while it's been lovefilm
not a single complaint. we've convinced others to sign up too, so have had vouchers for stuff and things like that.

If only there were some way you could use the internet to facilitate this desire.
Personally I just buy second hand DVDs off amazon if I like the film enough to warrant it.

Personally I don't like watching films on laptop or computer screens. I like to watch them on my TV and Lovefilm is not expensive.

*flounces back to /talk*
My old flatmate used to get her DVDs from amazon rental, copy them and send them back the next day so as to maximise her turnaround of films. She had a couple of those 100 disc spindles full of copied DVDs.
I believe that some clever people can play their computers through their televisions, I don't know how you do this, but I suspect not having an old CRT telly helps.

You might have gone off to /talk now for most of the time but you still come back for some good old off-topic loving : )

I had so many that were too scratched to play that I got fed up and cancelled. I also had the wrong film sent a couple of times (correct sleeve, wrong DVD).
My brother copies them straight away and then sends them back, so he has a fast turnaround time. He is running out of films and is on TV box sets (All 5 series of "the wire" is a good one to do).

I had it through Amazon, LoveFilm, and currently with Tesco. They all have LoveFilm SKUs on the discs, so they all came from the same stock.
We signed up over Christmas, when they offered 3 months free. We chose the unlimited rental, and we have been going through about 250 movies since then, and we've made our first payment of £13 just now. So that's good value. Have a look through the intrawebs for promotional codes to use when you sign up.
What I liked about it was that I could watch some shows not otherwise available in the UK. My missus and I watch Trailer Park Boys several times - brilliant Canadian television!
I had one DVD not show up, and I had to fill out a form from Royal Mail. No big deal.
For these reasons I give the service three stars.

I guess Im in the minority here. I used to be a member through Tesco, and thought it was properly gash for one reason alone - probably 60% of the discs I received were scratched badly enough so they either wouldnt play at all or would freeze at certain points. I initially thought it was down to my cheapy asda DVD player being too fussy, so invested in a good one but it was no better.
Granted, all I had to do was send them back with a wee form ticked to say they were damaged, and I would get something else from my list, but the hassle involved spoiled it for me.

that said I have only ever had Blu-rays and really niche dvds so I've never had a problem with scratches.

and it's the same company
i would adivse only ever having 10-15 titles queued and make sure you have three top picks selected at all times, never use the default medium setting
i would also invest in a skipdr
www.google.com/products?oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=skipdr&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=3i_VSYjDGdnNjAem2OiEDw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title
cos they discs often skip in older dvd machines

just use a little bit of whitening toothpaste on a clean cloth and polish the disc hard from the centre to the edge.
Then wipe clean.
