What is your aim in life?
I've not really ever had a serious one. Content to bimble along the path of least resistance.

For a long time now though, my aim has been to have a Porsche by the time I'm 30. My sights have gradually lowered until will I accept practically any model and age of 911.

What is your goal, how near completion are you, or how did you royally fuck it up?

My goal
is to get my charity up and running, and help people.

It's only over the past six months I've given myself the option to do this.

Right now, I'm at the start, and putting the web site together now with renewed motivation thanks to some enthusiasm from my physiotherapist, who's HOT and gives great foot manipulation.

I like Maltesers, too.

My aim
is to be debt free by the time I am 25.(not counting student loans)

This looks masively unlikely to happen. Unless I win the lottery.

My car aim is to own a DB9. This looks less likely to happen. Unless I win the lottery.

Or I do...

DB9 was good, don't get me wrong, the last season was epic, but I'll always have a soft spot for voyager.

My aim is to get qualified within two years
This means I have to find a job soon, or they'll kick me off the course.

I also want to travel more and if I'm RCVS qualified, I can work anywhere in the world as places always want British trained nurses as we're the best.

Huf Haus!
I want to buy some land in a pretty country and build a HufHaus completely to my own specification with things like a walk in shower room, a roof terrace, a waterfall feature in the garden and a dancers pole in the middle of the dining room so I can recommence my acrobatics. T'other half wants a bar in the living room as well.

I am nowhere near completion as it costs a mazillion pounds. Am waiting for t'other half to become a freelance IT consultant and earn said mazillions.

I'd also quite like to be a dragon (I mean the business mogul kind, not the fire breathing Sir George fighting kind....actually scrap that, make it both).

it would make the show more interesting

There is one goal I've had since I hit 20. I wanted to write and record an album. I did that one! Took me 2 years of my spare time but I finished it before it finished me.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:47, Reply)
playing in a band has been one of my supplementary aims
I'm pretty pleased with the one I've got at the moment, we're being very creative, and my drummer and I have managed to surreptiously steer it in a prog rock direction :-D

For the last 5 years
my aim has been to have my current boss's job by the time I'm 30.

At the time, I was 3 levels below him in the hierarchy. Now I'm immediately beneath him. If it looks like I'll take longer than the next 3 years to get there, he'd better start getting suspicious about the coffees that I'll start making for him.

EDIT: I did have an ambition when I was about 10 to be a F1 driver. Lack of any sort of parental funds put pay to that one, and the fact that I can't even fit in the F1 car in our reception area.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:47, Reply)
I had the F1 ambition too
I also lacked the parental fundage but I could fit in the car so I guess I can say I'd be a better F1 driver than you :p
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:53, Reply)
Complete lack of ambition
I just want to survive and be happy day to day... I don't have many goals after that. I'm easily pleased.

I would like to build my own house at some point though. Something with a tower.

(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:50, Reply)
that's a good point
I fully intend to build my own house at some point.

I'm a civil engineer, my other half is a structural engineer, my brother and his wife are architects. should be able to manage something.

I'm doing a degree
in interior design, so can I play too please?
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:52, Reply)
hmmm, possibly
I have some pretty strong ideas, and my bro gets involved with detailing all the interiors of the places he designs too. He's currently working on a £50 million mock-tudor mansion for some rich bastard.

Should be able to do it on the cheap if you do it all yourself.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:57, Reply)
well, it's more than likely going to be steel-framed
so doubt I could manage that all by myself ;-)

but we know how to keep costs down!

A few goals
- Become a professional musician - Done. I signed up to a record label last December and have released three albums through them and have got a fourth in the pipeline.

- Get married - Not done. Very single at the moment, so not likely to happen.

- Have a house and kids and all that family stuff - Not done. Very single, and also at university, so a bit limited on the funds and stuff.

- Get a proper casserole dish - Not done. I've wanted this for the last three years and I've not gotten around to it.

I think I need new aims and goals in life. Preferably vaguely attainable ones at this point in time.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:50, Reply)
Casserole dish
go and have a look somewhere like Makro if you can. I've got a lot of really good cookware from there pretty fucking cheap.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 10:51, Reply)
I keep meaning to
I just never get round to it. And my parents thought I was taking the piss when I asked for one a few Christmas's ago.

The end.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:09, Reply)
We were given a set of Le Creuset dishes
for Christmas because my other half thinks he's Marco Pierre White. I've been informed several times how expensive they are so now I'm afraid to even open the cupboards around the one that they're stored in.

They do clean like a dream though, even my appallingly cooked and soldered-on cheese-based concoctions.

Le Crouset
These beasts are basically indestructable, dropped onto a normal floor.

You are more likely to be damaged by one falling on your head, than it being damaged.

Instead of cleaning mine, I just heat it up until it smokes. Sterilised, job done. I'll wash it when I can be arsed.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 12:32, Reply)
Never really thought about it until the last year or so...
Clear all debts: Pending - taken out a loan which will see me almost completely debt free by 25.

Travel: Incomplete - I'd love to travel around France playing covers in bars in exchange for food/beer/bed.

Become a better person: Permanently pending?

Fall in love - ;)

I've thought about this quite a lot
Aims:

1) Earn my living by trading in the foreign exchange markets
2) Complete a computer science degree
3) Decide whether or not to move to a different country. Currently my feeling is yes but I'm not not sure which at the moment.
4) Occupy myself mostly by writing open source software and skiing

Progress:
1) Getting there. Aiming to put my money on the table for the first time in January. I was hoping to trade 4 currency pairs from the start but it's looking like I'll start with 1 and add others gradually.
2) Waiting to see how 1) turns out before I do anything about this. Currently teaching myself things in my own time. Mainly python, linux and postgresql at the moment as they're all very useful for 1).
3) This is somewhat dependant on 1) and 2). Vancouver is in my mind at the moment but I need to do a lot more research once moving becomes viable.
4) I already ski a lot but that's about it for this one.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:03, Reply)
Bear
in mind that while your learning of programming languages / OS may be good for helping you with your trading, it's unlikely to be incredibly useful in a Computer Science degree.

A Computer Science degree will involve a bit of coding, but not that much. A decent one will mostly cover the science, theory and logic behind computing, such as that practiced by Turing, Dijkstra, Hoare etc. Learning a bit of coding won't harm though.

(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:42, Reply)
Aye
I just put em down as it's something I'm doing to extend my knowledge of computing.

:edit: I presume you did a compsci degree ducky? Any advice on what I should particularly look for or avoid? All I have in my head at the moment is "do it at a good university" =/
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:49, Reply)
I
did indeed do a CompSci degree.

You won't go far wrong with the general mantra of 'do it at a good university', but the course you choose should mainly be governed by what you want to do with it afterwards.

I already knew what I wanted to do after I graduated, so I chose a degree at a good university that would allow me to specialise in real time computing and embedded system design in my final year. I wouldn't worry too much about which programming languages they use, because proficiency in any mainstream OO language will make it very easy to pick up others.

Don't bother with degrees where there are modules in systems management etc., although these seem to be mainly the lower-tier universities. Also, don't be enticed with modules in things like graphics, game design etc., unless these are areas you really want to move into. They've got little academic weight, and don't leave much scope for MScs/PhDs etc.

A decent degree will be mainly comprised of computer science theory, backed up with a strong mathematical component. Many of the better courses specify a decent grade at A-level maths, and this is often a good indicator of the course quality.

I want to be made redundant.
Before the bastards change the rules.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:14, Reply)
A few small things.
If you asked me when I was 17 it would have been "I want to be in a famous(!) band by the time I'm 25".

Well now that I'm 24 my priorities have changed somewhat. The band dream still lives on, although I'm not bothered about fame anymore. We have faith that we can make some decent music, it's just getting the time and money to actually get together an album. Finishing that would be incredible.

I am determined to leave my current job for the city though. It is easier said than done, especially lining up an interview in a place 5 hours away. Also I fear my current employer will find out that I've been putting out C.V.s and will bust my ass.

If the band thing totally falls on its arse then I'm liking the sound of moving abroad to teach English. I've checked up on getting some TEFL qualifications and it's totally affordable. Prague would be nice.

Whatever direction I take I need a new job and I'm not really close to achieving that.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 11:18, Reply)
Depending on what style your band is
I may be able to get you signed up to my label and release an album through them for you. Are you in a progressive or ambient band?
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 12:09, Reply)
I'm afraid not
I suppose we could be described as Guitar-Pop as much as it pains me to say it.

Although I'm after a sound more like The Jam or London Calling era Clash.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 12:38, Reply)
Hmmm
Can't really help you as my label is more of a progressive/artsy/ambient/drone label as opposed to guitar-pop/old-skool punk style.
(, Thu 4 Jun 2009, 12:47, Reply)
Thank you for the thought though
Since you're such a kind soul I'll give your band a listen tonight when I get back from work. (well the stuff on your profile anyway).
