Oystercard question
I made some enquiries this morning and apparently I can get a newfangled travelcard on my oyster to get to work each day to cover zones 1-3. My destination doesn't have working oyster machines though and wont be installing them until October - they're a bit backwards South of the river it seems - so will I be charged the extortionate fare each time I go to work?

Also, I only work 4 days a week - I know it's tough being me - but will need to go in on weekends sometimes, so the day I don't use, can I carry that over to the new week if that makes sense or do I lose it instead?

Probably
but of course, I can't back this up with any kind of "facts"

Then you my friend are not of much use to me
ALSO, you're gonna be rilly rilly old soon :)

Fuck off
I'll never be as old as you. Still though, good teeth for such an aging filly.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:49, Reply)
Oh em gee, you almost sounded like you meant that then

(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:51, Reply)
Only the part
about good teeth.

Dependent on the travelcard
Depends on whether you can carry it over. If it has a set number of trips, you'll be able to carry them over, but if it's timed, like a 28 day pass or something you won't be able to carry over days you won't use. Afraid I can't help you with the extortionate fare question though.

No carrying days over, I'm afraid.
Dunno about the lack of machines. Might be worth trying it for a week, make sure your pay-as-you-go's run out first mind.

So I just lose days then if it's a weekly or monthly travelcard?
What a fucking rip off. So then oftentimes I'll be paying for 3 days that I don't need. But to do it on returns will cost me so much more. FUMES.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:40, Reply)
Surely choosing a weekly or monthly pass which will work out cheaper than return tickets
Is worth it, even if you won't use every day?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:44, Reply)
Yeah, it's just the principle I object to
as I'm paying for days I wont use.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:52, Reply)
MTFU.
Or walk.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:54, Reply)
Ooh plan there. Walking
It's only 8 miles from Charing cross
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:02, Reply)
Ha!
You can dish it out but you can't take it.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:05, Reply)
I'm willing to walk it
so long as you do the same
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:06, Reply)
I don't need to.
I get a lift to work from a fantastic gay man.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:06, Reply)
So, MTFU and walk instead then
You can even cultivate an inferiority complex in your fantastic gay man while you do it. Win win.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:17, Reply)
So?
If it's still cheaper then who cares?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:58, Reply)
I'm a stickler for principle

(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:02, Reply)
As far as I know they don't do a fixed-number-journeys travelcard, just fixed-time-period ones.
1-3 costs just under £30 a week if I remember right, so if all you're going to use is 8 single journeys it won't save you any cash - an Oyster single in the rush hour should be about £2.80. If you're going places on the other days, with the odd bus journey or stop off elsewhere, then it might be worth you getting one.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:50, Reply)
It includes the overground too which is quite nice
as I live in zone 3 and work in the opposite zone 3, so I'd be paying out a lot more for singles past the tube bit. In that sense it's worth it, but irritating all the same as it would be £9 a day otherwise.

On the subject of Oystercards
If I'm turning up at Euston one evening next week and need to get a return tube to Vauxhall, can I buy a 1-roundtrip Oyster Card at Euston?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:43, Reply)
No, you can fucking walk

(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:52, Reply)
IN THESE HEELS?
Are you mad?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 18:59, Reply)
Too bad, MTFU

(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:02, Reply)
For £3 you can buy an oyster card to keep
then put some cash on it to pay for tubes, buses, etc. or just buy a one off paper travelcard.
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:19, Reply)
Does the £3 count towards a journey?
Or is that just for my convenience?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:48, Reply)
The £3 is a deposit so if you lose it, you'll get a new one and the money transferred to the new one

(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 21:27, Reply)
have you thought about
getting a bike?
(, Wed 8 Jul 2009, 19:06, Reply)
Have you thought about this is South London and it would get nicked before I even set off.
Nowhere to store it here or at work anyway.
