I recently
rediscovered the Alkaline Trio... most of you may think they are lame with a capital L-A-M-E but I care not, I like them!

Have you recently discovered any new bands or started listening to music you forgot your owned?

I relistened to some Ryan Adams recently
I hadn't heard much of his stuff since uni.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:06, Reply)
You reckon, if he wanted, he could do that Wonderwall song?

Typically I can buy an album for one song and not really end up enjoying it until a few years down the road.
Such as Vanessa Carlton 'Harmonium' and Hot Hot Heat 'Elevator'.
I listened to Hot Hot Heat a lot over the summer.

Also have just gotten into Ellie Goulding and have been waiting impatiently for the Versant album to be released.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:09, Reply)
Ah I like that Hot Hot Heat song
Its the only one I like of theirs... oh and Bandages!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:10, Reply)
I hadn't even heard the song until the summer, I bought it for "Middle of Nowhere"
but I was totally rocking out to Elevator before work today. I really really love Elevator.

edit: I also love love love love love "Let Me In" *swoons*
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:18, Reply)
Cooool!
I was marching along to work listening to Wolfmother! Huzah!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:20, Reply)
Elevator is a great album.
Not listened to it in a while though

Captain Beyond's first album is a hard rock revelation
How they weren't superstars in the 70s is a total mystery.

However (and I'll keep crapping on about them until I'm either blue in the face or someone else acquires it and agrees with me) TRACTOR's first self-titled album is the best thing I've been introduced to for years. The variety of styles and general vibe of the record fit my (somewhat particular) tastes like a bespoke tailor-made psychedelic glove.

Altogether now

TRAC-TOR
TRAC-TOR
TRAC-TOR

repeat ad nauseum

i will be checking these characters out
when i get home..i am intrigued by the fact St. John Peel was so heavily involved with them, and that, is a sign of quality.

The last track on the LP
descends into almost 'organic techno'. It's fucking nuts.

There are folky, quintessentially English passages, an uptempo blues number and some almost Hawkwindy trippy bits. A triumph.

"organic techno"
i'm having me some of that.

Slade
Their first album had a song Shape Of Things To Come. Anyone know if this was a cover and if so of whose?
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:12, Reply)
It is
Max Frost & The Troopers, although to my mind the Third Rail version is better
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:13, Reply)
Thank you sir
Someone tried to convince me it was a Beatles song.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:15, Reply)
The way that you can tell it's not
is in the way that it's not FUCKING SHIT.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:18, Reply)
My argument entirely!
Never a beatles fan.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:21, Reply)
I endorse this

(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:38, Reply)
Meh
I've always liked The Beatles, they're far from one of the best bands on the planet, but they're alright in my book! :)
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:44, Reply)
Let me rephrase
I don't hate them per se, I just think they are the most overrated band of all time, and not worthy of the adulation they continue to generate.

And Paul McCartney increasingly looks as if he's sucking a lemon that's been strategically dipped in dog shit and then paraded through a council estate first. What's with his fucking mouth, for fuck's sake?
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:49, Reply)
Oh I agree they're totally overrated by some people
I just like the songs, I'm not really interested in the band members... that pretty much goes for everyone I listen to with the exception of The Foos, I heart Dave :)
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:58, Reply)
I'm going to listen to 'Coz I Luv U' right now

(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:16, Reply)
Alkaline Trio were ace
They've gone downhill. 'From Here To Infirmary' is a superb album though.

As for me, it's Mastodon. I heard them about 5 years ago, they were rubbish. I recently listened to their most recent album 'Crack The Skye', and loved it!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:13, Reply)
obviously not as good as Keane, though, eh?
*still shaking head in disbelief at that admission*
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:15, Reply)
You'll get over it
It's a superb album!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:28, Reply)
Music / Talent - Guitar + bumming = Keane
MATHS
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 16:24, Reply)
I agree
From Here To Infirmary is my favourite album of theirs! :)

I haven't really heard that much stuff by Mastodon... I'll add them to my list of people to give a listen to!

I've been working my way through Rise Against's back catalogue recently
When they first broke through a few years back, I wrote them off generic US punk, along the same lines as Bad Religion.

However, there was one of their songs on one of the Guitar Hero games I liked and has now developed into a minor obsession!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:20, Reply)
Rise Against
Are pretty cool. I found out about them after I brought a Warped Tour CD and heard some of their stuff! :)

The Alkaline Trio song Private Eye is good
has some good lyrics

I've been listening to lots of metal recently. I'd not been listening to it for a while. It's all about Iron Maiden at the moment.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:20, Reply)
Private Eye is a wicked song
You're right - good lyrics indeedy! :)

The Crooked Jades
Best band i've heard since in 10 years, easily. After hearing just one song on Andy Kershaw and falling in love with it, the stars aligned and they were actually touring the UK just a few weeks later. With schoolboy levels of joy, i attended their first ever gig on Scotland. They had only been playing for 30 seconds and I knew I was privvy to something very special indeed.

Coming from a largely electronica based gig experiences I was stunned and cowed by these banjo worrying, fiddle sawing, mandolin stroking artisans. Complexity that would make Venetian Snares cower and melodies that could bring a tear to a glass eye.

I'm on a mission to spread the word far and wide, so here is a track, the first i ever heard, from an album called "World's on Fire"

"If assholes could fly

I could forgive Alkaline Trio almost anything just for that lyric.

Ghost Box Records
Pretty much anything on Ghost Box is worth checking. The highly touted 'Broadcast & the Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age' is absolutely superb.

The Big Star box set is a must too.

Oh - and I finally got around to The Flower Travellin' Band's 'Satori' - magnificent.

And listened to Aztec Camera 'Knife' for the first time in decades - it really is a lost classic.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 14:38, Reply)
Noted
about Ghost Box Records.

I've always listened to anything off Fat Wreck Chords or Vagrant Records!
